They're here!

Shenandoah Valley, VA

My chicks from Ideal arrived today. Aren't they cute?! Everyone appears very healthy and alert. They've all had plenty of water and ate enthusiastically. The little "chipmunks" are adorable.

(I added some much better pictures today. Scroll down to see them.)

Two rose comb brown leghorns, two golden laced wyandottes, two barred rocks, two ameraucanas, one black austrolorp, one buff brahma (with the cutest little baby leg feathers!), all pullets, and five roosters included for warmth. Anybody want a free rooster? LOL

Freedom, PA(Zone 6a)

You are going to have some beautiful chickens there. I don't need any roosters, LOL. I'll probably be hatching more than I can use myself.

Just loooooooove 'em! So sweet and cuddly! they just grow too fast!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Look how cute those are! I'm about to place my first chick order but I keep changing my mind on types. LOL We want egg layers since the kids probably wouldn't eat the birds.

I think I have it narrowed down to Buckeyes, Buff Orphingtons and Araucana but then keep considering the mix so it would be a surprise....

I know I saw your list somewhere but will have to go find the thread. Did you get Black Austalorps? Those were on one of my lists. This is like buying shoes and plants! Too many choices. ;)

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Oh I have Silver Laced Wyandots on the list too! I remembered I missed those when I found the gold ones on your list!

I'm really not a chicken buyer stalker, really...but I did find your list. LOL
2 Rose Comb Brown Leghorns
2 Ameraucanas
2 Golden Laced Wyandottes
2 Barred Rocks
1 Black Austrolorp
1 Buff Brahma

Oh good grief! I should shut up now. I see you listed them above. Oh my!

My only prior experience was with white leghorns. If you want to be awash in eggs, get one or two of those. From what I have read, the brown leghorns aren't quite as productive.

I spent hours and hours narrowing down my wish list. There are so many pretty chickens. I finally made a series of lists based on the information on mypetchicken and that list that gives info on all the breeds including temperament. First list was good egg layers. Then I went back through and checked off the ones that were also friendly or docile, then checked again for the ones that were hardy. Then I made another list with the ones that were pretty and matched up the lists to get the top picks.

The little Ameraucanas are so cute. They have their little beards already.

One of the roosters is really different from the others. He (she?) is the smallest in the whole bunch, more of a golden color than the pale yellow of the other roosters and if you look closely, there are tiny little black "hairs" among the gold feathers.

After lunch, everyone settled down for a long siesta with breaks here and there for a few quick snacks.

When they start chirping, my cockatiel talks back to them. LOL

Great pics !!!! Looking at everybody's list compared to mine I think you all have much better restraint then I do...lol. But I will cull out my extras for freezer camp eventually.

Good luck with the chicks and don't forget to post more pics as they feather out.

LOLOLOLOL, Badseed..............you chicken buyer stalker - - - lmbo. Too funny. I understand the value of your "want" list, believe me. I too spent HOURS and several lists before ordering mine this year. And now, I would do it a bit differently, so you just never know!
Hart, keep us posted up on pics. Those feathers will come along soon and I love that stage. They change so much and get so pretty!

There's a lot to be serious about when you're only three days old.

Strasburg, VA(Zone 6b)

omg.....too adorable....do roosters need company or are they ok solo?

Robertsville, MO

They are so cute how old are they?
Tracey

Shenandoah Valley, VA

Larlienda, you're welcome to as many roosters as you want if you want to make sure they don't get lonely. LOL

Tracey, they arrived yesterday, were mailed the day before so I guess they're three days old.

Strasburg, VA(Zone 6b)

do they get along if there aren't little hens around to impress?

Shenandoah Valley, VA

I'll look it up in my chicken book. I would imagine they do.

Strasburg, VA(Zone 6b)

guess we also have the poultry major to ask too!!!!

btw...never got an answer about which came first ;-)

Shenandoah Valley, VA

Stupid book. There are pictures of two roosters together, one slight mention that you can have more than one rooster if the have plenty of space. Not terribly helpful.

LOL on what came first. Here it least, the chickens came first.

Found this here http://www.webelfin.com/chickens/

When to mix Roosters with the rest of the flock - Roosters fighting
Roosters who have not grown up together will fight to the death. If you separate a rooster from the others that he has grown up with, even for a day, he loses his priviledged status, and the others will fight him to the death when he returns to the flock. I have always raised my chicks in the same barn as the old flock, with only a wire netting between them. This is not a practice to be encouraged, in fact, it should be positively discouraged because of the danger of transmitting diseases from the old birds to the young ones. However, having said that, I was always able to mix my young roosters with the existing ones, so long as I did it when the babies were about 8 weeks old. By then, they were big enough that they were not picked on by the old birds, but the young roosters had not yet matured and so were not a threat to the old ones. I do not know if it would work if you brought in new ones that the old roosters had not seen grow up through the wire fence.

Strasburg, VA(Zone 6b)

hmmmmm, my thought is if they get along together we can probably set something up....i remember my aunt had a mix of diff birds...turkeys, chickens, ducks, etc so if it's ok to add other birds later that would be fine...mike has to fix the chicken coop/condo (i'll send a pic) has two sides...one you can see through the front to the back & up the hill and the other side is missing a floor :-)
with one less house after next friday it will get bumped up on the to-do list!

Your chicks are great! Thanks for posting them, I have 14 Ameraucana eggs in the bator due to hatch on Monday, I was wondering what some of them might look like.

I'll have to check on that, I think it 99 degrees you keep them at. I do know the temp goes up when they are about to hatch, all the chicks in the bator about to hatch raise the temp in the bator, ours is now at 101, they are due tomorrow. I'll have to aks DH to make sure, I don't pay attention to that kind of stuff, LOL. DH likes to incubate eggies, I think mama's do a great job and is much easier, LOL.

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Hey , Im really not a good one to ask about 'bators! I never have luck with them! But Brandenburg is right on! Belinda has wonderful luck with hers !

Antrim, NH

Bah,

roosters.

Okay, so this is what I know about roos from experience.
My next door neighbor has several and they all get along fine, but they have been together since birth. THat's probably the way to go with roos. Hens you can mix up and they will work it out, but you know how men are...lol....

Roos can start out friendly and end up protecting the flock even from YOU which is bad news. I have heard silkie roos are good in general ( and at least they are small!) so I am casting my lots with straight run silkies this spring. But really it is all up in the air as to a roo's temperment.

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Aint that the Truth!!!!! Old CockleLooLoo is the tamest people roo I know , but the week Mama BBR went on the nest , He attacked me for the first and only time! He was just as startled as I was and hasnt done it again , but Im very wary now! But Mr. Pepito, cant even come into the barn now!

Freedom, PA(Zone 6a)

My last silkie batch we hatched 4 roosters. 2 had to go, they do fight just like the big breeds. One was terrible he attacked me daily, wouldn't let me around the hens with out a broom. As long as he saw the broom he would behave himself. But 2 of roosters thought they were king and fought all the time, they upset everyone in the coop. They drew blood on each other. DH found homes for them. Thank God. The 2 silkie roosters that are still here are very sweet, they don't fight, well not yet anyway. I hope they stay as sweet and gentle as they are. I'm now waiting to see how they react when I take mama and babies back to the coop. I'll wait until the weather improves, warmer night temps. I have heard they are great daddy's, we shall see.

Cathy
