I planted moonflower seeds in a flat last night. I soaked them for 2 hours in warm water, but didn't nick them.
After reading about how troublesome it is to get these buggers to bloom, I'm considering digging them up to properly soak and nick them.
What would you do?
Un-nicked moonflower seeds?
Dig em up and nick
What do you mean [troublesome it is to get these buggers to bloom] just curious....
Beth, the seedcoat on these is harder than a rock..
I use dog nailclippers to nip these guys. But, I haven't done this variety in a couple of years, they also burst, crack, or what have you really quick if you don't keep your eye on them.. try nicking and as soon as you see swelling, pot them up, they may still take a while to germinate, but you won't lose the seeds.

I know the seedcoat is hard, I just wondered what Weather meant about trouble getting them to bloom. Maybe it just means trouble getting them to grow? or sprout?
Oh... you know... I've never had a bloom either.. so, it could be they like it cool to bloom, I was in the hottest part of CA, low desert area where we got 117 for a couple of weeks straight, so I think it may be heat related.

Maybe Weather will have better luck, being in zone 6b
i never nick my moonflowes and they come up just fine. just keep soaked.
moonflowers( ipomoea alba) like water too. mine start flowering around august for me. they do grow alot of greenery though. but they will wilt if they dont have there water supply. mine are in full un everyday. I water when wilted.
they also dont like fluxing temps either.
Beth, I should have written "how troublesome it is to get the little buggers to germinate."
"Buggers" is from the Latin "bug," meaning "concrete seed coat."
Hey wheather what part of Quincy are you in i did a lot of fishinng there walston beach
Jeeze paul, is there ANYPLACE you haven't fished?

Weather,
I planted Moonflower about 2 weeks ago and all 6 out of 6 germinated. (i was trying for 1).
I poured boiling water in a coffee mug dropped in the seeds and left them till the next morning.
They germinated in about 3-4 days. They are under light so 2 days after germination I did help them out of their dry hard cement jackets. The tops of the vines are from 5-9" now.

(#6 was on the top shelf, so I left it there)
