Shes a beauty!
Sinningia AC 1530 bloomed
That is GORGEOUS, Jan!! What is your secret to getting all these things to bloom so beautifully? And I'm so glad to see that I'm not the only one who takes pictures of the bud formation and growth process. ;o)
That is so lovely. Did you grow that one from seed?
Cute!
Mine just opened up today too and they look like twins! (except mine is still in its 3oz Dixie cup) I'll try to get a photo tonight.
And I should ask someone what the AC number stands for.
I've had similar sinningias produce bigger and more open flowers in their second blooming year, so I wonder if these will do the same...?
Snowrose - it's from the gesneriad society seed fund - Sinn speciosa AC 1503.
Thanks...
AC = Alain Chautem, the collector; 1503 = accession number
:-)
I think some of the seedlings from my mixed Gesneriad seed package are Sinningias. Sure hope that's one of them!
For comparison, here is 1503 next to a hybrid of 1503 and Regina. Regina looks like this: http://gesneriads.ca/sinni139.htm
Note that both are forms of the same species, Sinningia speciosa.
I believe I sowed all of these at the same time - December 2005. The 1503xRegina went completely dormant for a bit, and when it came back, I potted it up one size. The 1503 did not go dormant. The difference in size is huge, though I don't know if it's also genetic.
I have another speciosa that is labeled "blue" that has leaves even bigger than the 1503xregina cross. That one went dormant too. And, I have another with a different AC number - that one is bigger than 1503 but smaller than the others.
Notice how the regina cross has red-backed leaves. The other with a different AC number has veined leaves and is gorgeous. Buds forming on all of them :-)
Wow, that's a big one, Jan! When did you sow those seeds? I wrote down somewhere when I sowed mine, but can't find where I wrote it and certainly don't remember.
Beautiful Ki, I love the red on the leaves of that plant.
I wonder if I can take the lower bottom leaves off of my AC 1503 to make it a more manageable size? The bigger the pot the bigger the plant gets? I have so much to learn:)
That is a big plants.lol.Its already grown up over the lights.I'm going to take a cutting and restart it and pinch it after it roots to see if I can make it busher.I sowed the seeds 11/24/ 06. These little plants can from the same package of mixed seeds sowed at the same time.
Gosh Jan, I think they must have put one of the seeds of Jack's Beanstalk in your Gessie seeds! LOL It's fun watching and wondering what they'll turn out to be, isn't it? Your little plants are so cute! Any idea of what they are?
I still can't find when I sowed mine, but it was later than yours. Sometime in January, I'd guess. I wish I hadn't knocked the pot over and maybe I'd have had more than 5 seeds to germinate. How many of yours germinated?
I can't believe I missed this thread.I need to get on here more.LOL Those are all fabulous looking!
Hi Jan, I don't think you should trim the outer leaves. Unlike AVs, these don't continue to grow. The growth habit is more cyclical - send out a growth, grow leaves, bloom, set seed, die back. Some of them, when mature, may have multiple growths at different stages, making it "everblooming", but each growth will be going through its cycle.
There are some sinningias with stems that can be cut back and they will branch, but speciosa is not one of them.
So now that yours is blooming, you can expect it to slow down after this. Pollinate if you feel like it - you could even try putting micro pollen onto it :P. Not sure if the first blooms can support a pod yet, but there's only one way to find out.
As for size of the plant, I think that keeping the pot small will not necessarily keep the plant small. I grow mine hard (drench/dry watering) and the ones in smaller pots seem to make bigger tubers. The next year, the foliage turns out massive. (This is what is happening with my Regina cross and other one)
LOL.Jack's Beanstalk.Too cute:) It is large. The big one we think might be a kohleria. The others I have no idea what they are but will be fun trying to find out what they are. I got 6 plants out of the package.I lost a few.2 or 3 look the same and the others are a mystery.
Ki, Thanks again for all the info. It's fun learning about these plants.I think I will try to get seeds from this plant or try anyway.
hey Jan! does yours smell? I just sniffed mine and it has a slight fragrance. Very slight, but......
This is too funny. I *never* check for fragrance!
could I be dreaming ... ?
