New Yorkers!

Kennedy, NY(Zone 4a)

Hi! Just wanted to hear from other NYS gardeners. Especially those around the Great Lakes. Lord knows, we are far away from the growing season with all our snow this year! Hope to hear from other NYS folks!

Knowlesville, NY

Hello Nepthys-
Your'e right-growing season is far away. I can see green grass now that the snow has melted here. I'm in Knowlesville, NY, halfway between Buffalo and Rochester. Where is Kennedy? Being 10 miles from lake Ontario, we are in a little pocket of zone 6a. I can put out tomatoes on Memorial Day. When can you plant? I read a post last night from a lady on the Texas Gulf coast who had her tomato plants on the porch hardening off!
I have been chatting with Carolyn Male on the AOL tomato board. She wrote the 100 heirloom tomato book and spoke at SSE last year. She also lives in NY, north of Albany I believe. I'm planning a huge growout of tomatoes this year plus the usual crops to feed the family. What things do you plna to plant this year?

Kennedy, NY(Zone 4a)

Hi Scott!

Well, I'm about 75 miles south of Buffalo, in Chautauqua County. I'm about 15 miles from the PA border. We are pretty much Zone 5 here. I haven't seen green grass since Thanksgiving. It's snowing now, and we've had over seven feet of snow this year. I plan on growing lots of herbs, tomatoes, squash, and tons of flowers this year. But not of that will happen until late May - June, if I'm lucky. :)

Richfield Springs, NY(Zone 4a)

Here's one more. We're located about ten miles north of Cooperstown. Not even a hint of spring here yet!

Kennedy, NY(Zone 4a)

Hi Frank! Thanks for saying hello... :)

Falconer, NY(Zone 6a)

hi there Nepthys, i bet we are the closest neighbors in here. I live in falconer just 5 mins away from you.lol Glad to see someone close here.

Panama, NY(Zone 5a)

Hey, three Chautauqua county gardeners!
I'm in North Clymer (I know, it says Panama, they closed our Post Office), and we are having a horrible day - lake effect snow, nasty wind and do you remember spring?????
It's so cold in the back room that the plants that are up look like they might be thinking of going back in the seed!

Kennedy, NY(Zone 4a)

Hi Connie and Kathleen!

We can start our own little clan... The Chautauqua Crew... hehehehe Glad to see both of you!

Today definately was nasty... we went to Big Lots and had to sit in the BK parking lot for 10 minutes until the squall passed 'cuz we couldn't see anything!

Can you guys tell me what you like to grow? It will be interesting to see what we all do.

I plan on a limited amount of tomatoes this year... probably just a couple of plants. I have an 8' by 15' garden that will be all herbs this year. And poppies! and sunflowers, of course... :)

And my baby abutilion, which has to flower buds... yippee!

Schenevus, NY

I am about 12 miles south east of Cooperstown. Frank if you look close there are little hints of spring. I cut some pussy willows last week and lilacs which are just starting to open inside. spring will be here...someday.

East Bethany, NY(Zone 6a)

Hi all - I'm from Batavia (where they used to have the horse race track) - in reality, I'm about 4 miles se, in E. Bethany - but if you blink your eyes twice, you've missed it.

I'm just getting into this plant thing - in the past, I've mostly planted annuals and the usual Spring perennials (crocus, tulips and daffodils). I did some seed trading last fall and I'm looking forward to starting the seeds in the basement.

THINK SPRING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kennedy, NY(Zone 4a)

I'm convinced Spring is never coming to Western NY. hehehe

Hilton, NY(Zone 6a)

Hello fellow New Yorkers! I live closest to Scott and Gail, in Hilton, NY about 25 miles west of Rochester, and 25 miles east of Batavia and about 90 miles from Buffalo. I enjoy "theme" gardening and have created a formal Japanese style garden, Rose Garden (very small-will expand this year), an animal garden, a large, round, perennial garden and this year will design and develop a children's garden. I also am a grower of African Violets and have over 200 varieties.

Cobleskill, NY(Zone 5a)

Hi everyone! I am in Cobleskill. Between Albany and Buffalo. I have snow in my yard but people in the valley are thawing out quickly. I am hoping to get in the greenhouse soon!!!

Falconer, NY(Zone 6a)

Chaut. Co. Gang- i like it. lol. I dont do vegies, we dont eat them, I mostly just have perenialls and of course my pond. I would rather be outside working than in the house, this weather is killing me now. Im really over it, my brother just got back from flordia this week, he said it was in the 80s everyday and too hot to go outside, see what he brought back with him. I hate snow!!!!!!!!!!!

Schenevus, NY

Meghan...Cobbleskill..zone 5..I am envious.(but i think its good about the snow cover. It might help with the winds blowing up on the hill outside of Schenevus. I consider it zone 4 up here.
Green house??Do you heat it? I have often thought of one but i wonder about controlling the bug infestations. The thought of better living thru chemicals(Dupont) scares me a little. e

East Bethany, NY(Zone 6a)

There are more of us New Yorkers out there than I thought there were. Where are the rest of us????

Knowlesville, NY

I heard some bluejays today--spring must be considering an appearance this year! Last year was so wet and cold here in Orleans County. I'm hoping for warm weather this year as I'm planning a growout of over 100 tomato varieties. I was inspired by my first trip to Seed Saver's Heritage Farm. One of the speakers at the annual convention was Carolyn Male, author of "100 heirloom Tomatoes for the American Garden". She is also a New Yorker--north of Albany. Anyone here planning on going to the SSE campout convention in July?
Well, I'm going back to garden dreaming and planning!
Scott

Hey...I'm here too!! WAY out here on Long Island!Snow just melted here, but seeing some of my Montauk Daisies popping some buds!YYYYYAAHHOOOOO!! Bye! Pearl

Cobleskill, NY(Zone 5a)

eiroberts. I have friends that spend time in schenevus. They are from worcester and I know the weather is even colder there. this is my first year with my greenhouse I am working on it this weekend. EVERYONE out here has one. only they are bigger and I am jealous.
If anyone is close to Albany area there is a garden show maybe in Hudson? in the beginning of March. I will get info tonight and post if anyone is interested. Personally, I will travel for ANYTHING garden related right now. SPRING FEAVER ughhh

East Meadow, NY

I have a home on the island and a home upstate in deleware, get to garden in zone 7a, and in zone 4b. Can't stand snow anymore, moved downstate after the flood.

Kennedy, NY(Zone 4a)

It's funny, because when you talk to someone online, they almost always assume you are from "The City". Kind of annoys me, then they think that you are uninteresting. Oh well. :) I love my little corner of NY, even though I complain about the weather... profusely, actually. But I still like it. :)

I'm going to the Sabres-Coyotes game tonight, so it better quit snowing!!! hehhe

Panama, NY(Zone 5a)

You're more ambitious than I am - I'm staying home with a hot cup of tea and a good garden catalog!
Kathleen

Schenevus, NY

if I hear myself complain about the weather up here...i try to remind myself that this is where i live..if i hate it, then move. another old scandnavian(?) saying "there is no bad weather, only bad clothing" spring soon come and this cold will be a distant memory..then back again.
