I've seen very nice structures made exclusively from rebar.

Good point Anita. I wouldn't think you'd need a whole length of rebar to anchor it. Hopefully someone who has done it will explain.
Yes, Anita, rebar pounded down through the pipe for anchors. For many uses the copper is certainly strong enough to be pounded without any damage.
Here's what Jack just said:
3/4" pipe with rebar (if you wish - it's hard to get the 1/2" rebar pounded through the pipe) OR use longer pieces of the copper for a better anchor and no rebar would be needed. SOLDER, no glue.
