Peat moss vs. peat humus for germination

Weston, FL

I have heard that peat moss can be more effective than potting soil to germinate seeds. Add in some perlite or vermiculite? What about peat humus? (I saw a 40lb bag of this at WalMart fot $1.22-- Seemed like such a deal!) I also read about the paper towel/ coffee filter in the baggie method. How about using egg cartons to hold seeds & potting medium? Thanks for your patience with a beginner! I have a large variety of seeds and would like to get some started this week. I'll probably experiment with several methods.

I'm not familiar with "peat humus". However, I make a mix of several things for my seeds. Primarily (about 50% peat moss), perlite (about 20%), Black Kow (about 20%), and regular potting soil any brand really (about 10%). The peat moss is very fine and allows the seeds to easily emerge. The perlite helps to airiate the soil. The Black Kow is composted cow dung which gives a bit of umph. The regular potting soil just aids in water retention... as peat moss can and does dry out quickly. My measurements given are just a real guess... I scoop from here and there ... but it mostly consists of peat moss.

Take care,

Thank-you very much! From what I could tell from the bag (Earthwise Products - or smthg like that), it looked like it was possibly peat moss mixed with manure. However I am not quite sure. I will use your recommendations so thanks again!

Your welcome!!!

I went cheap and used matreials I had on hand for seed starting - started 'em in cardboard egg cartons with some regular old potting soil (sterilized). So far I seem to be having good results! I plan on separating the egg cups, slicing the bottoms so the roots can grow through, and sticking them into larger pots to continue growing until its safe to plant them out.
