Need a winter tree ID...

Scott County, KY(Zone 5b)

...but I take not so good pics from the deck on a cold morning while I'm trying to be quiet and only PJs and mukluks on.

Any help is appreciated.

It's the taller multi-stemmed one behind the varmint.

Here's a closer view; my hands were cold.

Maybe a view from further back will help by providing some context. The frosty morning gives a little contrast.

Dang! I wish I had been steadier...there are some sharp features that probably would make the ID easier.

That's a Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes), not a Varmint (Varminthus americanus) ;-)

No idea what the shrub is! Can you get a close-up when the fox has moved on?

Well, here you can see some of the branches a little better.

This is about the best one, if the pesky conifer and the distracting Dipsacum don't discourage definitiveness.

Looks like a Gleditsia triacanthos. Cute little varmint that y'all got running around. Was it digging out a mouse or something?

Ding ding ding...LHDP is as sharp and clever as that fox was this morning. And his feet weren't cold, I bet.

I think he must've caught about half a dozen in the time I was watching him/it. I tried to capture him as he pounced; pretty much all of those images were blurry.

I hope for another show tomorrow; it'll be frosty again and I'll wear a coat this time.

Resin:

Vulpus vulpus indeed; I think that was the sound he made consuming the itinerant rodents.

BCA:

Chicken is probably what I'd have tasted like, to him.

Next time, I'll get the top view with maybe some thumb scale in the photo.

Cercidiphyllum japonicum 'Rotfuchs'?

Are you kidding me - they make great pets.

Wooow! bigcityal~I am impressed, but doesn't he miss "the wild blue yonder"?

That could be one of two things: Someone's pet red fox, or something a society lady is about to throw over her shoulders before she goes to the charity ball. I'm hoping for the former.

Is it a pet? If so, tell us the story. How did it come to be a pet, and how well does a fox adapt to household living?

Would a society lady go to a charity ball?? Surely that would be decidedly infra dignitatem!

Resin,

Wasn't there recently a big stir about outlawing fox hunting in Britain? How did that turn out?

Not too long ago a fox wandered across a pasture area that I look out across from my second floor office. Our two dogs started barking and running towards him, but being more chicken than canine they abrubtly stopped when the fox didn't turn tail. In fact, he started to wag his tail as if he wanted to play with them. Our dogs then found their courage and made a not so gallant charge at him and he finally ran off.

I had a grey fox that would come in my backyard last year and nibble the fallen pears. If I got within 50ft of him he would run off though. That was actually the first time I had ever seen one on my property.

Yep, hunting foxes with dogs is now illegal in Britain. Still a political hot potato here, so I guess all the pros and cons are not really suitable for DG (saves me the bother of having to go into it in any detail, it's pretty tedious :-)

There'll be more than plenty on the Beeb website if anyone really wants to know

Amazing, both the feral and the domesticated.

Yes that is a tame fox. My brother in law's girlfriend. I believe it is part red and part silver. I guess it gets some funny looks when they walk it.

here's my son feeding it, they have a dog that it gets along with too.

Your brother in law's girlfriend is a fox??

Wow!!

Question is...is she a PHAT fox?

Hey al, your son appears to be my boys age, very cool, he's pretty brave. Did you see the weather forecast for tonight/tomorrow? I'm in a state of shock, as the garden was just appearing to recover.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

DubL V - she's not really that hot, but make an offer - you never know ;)

PG - he's a little more brave than his older sister. I given up with the weather this year.

Thornton, IL

This Year?? Just wait Al, those bugs haven't happened yet, I bet that'll be gross, LOL. That's when I'll throw in the trowel. I'm sure my son will love it.
