I think newly planted crape myrtle is dead!

Randleman, NC(Zone 7a)

I planted a new crape myrtle about a week ago and the past 3 days the temp dropped below freezing. I covered it the first two days, but did not on the 3rd day. It was growing some leaves, and now they have turned black and falling off! I don't know if the tree has died, or just the leaves. I don't know much about crape myrtles, so I hope someone can help me. I live in zone 7, and it was in the 80's about a week ago. The temps are now going back up and I am hoping no more freezing temps!

Just the leaves. It will re-grow from dormant buds over the next week or two.

Don't worry it will be fine.

You may want to keep an eye on the other crape myrtles in your area. My crape myrtle is about the last think to leaf out in my garden...usually not until May. I think you would have to work pretty hard to kill a crape myrtle!

If your plant had been well-established then it should absolutely come back, the thing that makes me worry a little is that you had just planted it. I lost a few things during our big freeze back in January that would have ordinarily been expected to survive because they had just been planted and weren't well established yet. The best thing to do is wait and see--there's a good possibility it'll come back for you so you have nothing to lose by waiting a month or two and see what happens.
