Happy Easter to everyone... look at my Easter Egg

Mesilla Park, NM

I went to check on our fruit trees and was playing with the cat under the Mexican Elder tree, I found an Easter Egg.. I think it is a Dove egg.. they are here all day (I feed them too), about a dozen of them.

Okay, I need help to hatch this.. or germinate it like my DH said.. just do it like you do your morning glories..lol

I warmed it up in my hands and put it into this cup..on some cotton from a pill bottle..

The warmest place I can think of is between two domes on the heat mats with the lights on.. do you all think that will be okay, or too hot..???

Put a light bulb on it to keep it warm and it may hatch if it's fertile!!

Oops, typing at the same time ☺.... That's a great idea, you may be feeding a baby soon!!

Don't laugh at me now... but one year, I ordered something like 5,000 earthworms and had these bins in the bathtub during the winter... boy do I get myself into trouble.

I was just thinking I may have to order some more or try to make a real quick compost area to have some on hand if this egg really does hatch.

You should be able to get mealy bugs at the pet store. My son used to get them for his lizards..

Gourd, here is a site that speaks about raising baby doves:

I hope it provides some help.

I don't know what we are going to call this orphan, but I suggest you get a 50# bag of granola and begin your regurgitation exercises right away. wink

Before you start spending a lot of time on this project, go into a darkened room and take a flashlight with you and hold it behind the egg to see if there is an embryo. This page will show you what to look for:

http://www.geocities.com/thoronton/eggs.html

If it appears there is an embryo, you should turn the egg 3 times a day. Check the egg with the flashlight in about 7 days and if you don't see any difference from the first time you looked at it, it's probably not viable.

Good luck!!

How long does it take for the gg to hatch?

scio, oregon, OR(Zone 8a)

I don't know about doves, but most poultry is 21-29 days. They like it about 98 degrees and humid for successful hatching.

I found another one... but, it looks like they are not fertile. In a way I'm glad because they have to be feed differently than regular birds.. and I don't think I could keep them alive.

The winds here have died down some, but come back during the night. So, I hope the fence we are having built will protect these doves some and their nests.
