I had one this afternoon for the first time....My brother had one last week.....they aren't staying around long for the feeders as they will later on...right now we have had so much rain plus I have so many flowers down in the garden and wild flowers in the pastures, etc. They will be back for good for a while!!!!

hummingbirds in south Texas
I must be posting in the wrong place....this is pretty exciting news...my brother and I couldn't figure out why they aren't eating out of the feeders until i just read on this forum that snapdragons and columbine are two great nectaring plants for ruby throated hummingbirds...I have 500 Rocket snapdragons in full bloom right now....now I know..
Congrats gg!!!! It is exciting!
Wow, 500 snaps...that must be beautiful! They probably prefer the flowers over the nectar.
That's great news Gessie.
I have a couple of hummies that stick around all year long. There is one that uses the large leaves of my chalice vine to bath. Will have to get a photo soon.

thanks ladies....Cat, I actually haven't planted your wonderful chalice vine yet...it needs to get out of the pot and into the ground....in wanting to plant it by a study fence, should i put it in a big concrete container on the concrete or further down the fence line among the flamevine and esperanza I have planted...how big does it get???
I got nicknamed gessiegail from loving the gesneriads so much!!! old user name was bettygail....wanted to remind you that you sent me the great chalice vine...

Ah was wondering if there were two folks from Taft on here.
The chalice vine can grow big. I've seen it growing in the corner of a yard and the branches run the length of the fence...about 25 feet in two directions.
I keep mine in 5 gallon pots and prune them back so they won't grow wild. Have one in the ground that I haven't pruned back in months. There are some branches that are already 10 feet tall. That's the plant the hummie uses for bathing.
That little hummie shows up each morning between 8 and 9. It rubs itself against the leaves - the morning dew adheres to the feathers and this it goes and perches on a nearby trellis to preen itself. Very cute to watch.
Haven't been able to get good photos yet. Have a couple of short video clips but it moves too fast! I have only this semi-decent photo so far.

How exciting, Cat!!! I will plant mine tomorrow in a giant clay pot where it can climb on a fence....
