Will 21 degrees........

Peoria, IL

freeze off young, silver maple seeds? We had 25 last night (after a predicted 33~ lots of brown stuff at the nursery today :( ) and it zapped most everything else. I can only wish damage to these gutter-filling creatures. 21 on Friday night. Frozen seeds/unfilled gutters would mean less work for me and well, probably more rank growth that will break off in a few years and mess up the yard. I just can't win. Who else has brown plants everywhere? Sorry, no pictures: too much work playing cover my tail.

Ernie

I have what looks like spinach hanging from my ninebark, where it started to leaf out and then froze. Good luck CYT Ernie! :)

Is that 21 degrees below freezing? Then, yes.

Conversion Alert:

21ºF = -6.11ºC

Brrr.

And it only kills the things you want, Ernie. The Lonicera maackii, Lonicera japonica, and Rosa multiflora receive special dispensation to soldier on.

30ºF (-1.11ºC) here this morning.

It was 21 F here this AM. Grrrrr. Uggghhh. snnnaaarrrllll. Hellebores laying flat on the ground looking sad. They will probably recover. Fortunately, the magnolia season has mostly not started yet here though I have seen a few plants out in early bloom that will certainly get badly nailed. And there is virtually nothing in leaf yet, woody plant wise. That is good. These hard freezes at this time are maddening, but most plants can deal with them here.

The really bad freezes for us are those that come every so often in midMay, and especially after most plants have leafed out most of the way. I recall one hard freeze a few years ago about May 15 or so that killed quite a number of woody plants in my garden outright -- a number of magnolias and japanese maples in particular.

Yes, I have bad zone envy. Oh, to live where resin lives, where hellebores and witchhazels bloom in January, and a "hard freeze" is 30F.

Why, I would even learn the centigrade scale ;o) .......................

Eau Claire, WI

It got down to 16F (-9C) last night. Tomorrows high will be 30F (-1C) with a low of 13 (-10.5). On Monday, March 26 it was 80F (27C), which broke the previous record of 76. This is really discouraging.

Heart breaking is more like it. The Dr. Merrill magnolia was in full bloom. The weeping Higan was just starting to show color. All gone now. Blooms frozen solid. The temperature was supposed to get to 35 today but I think that it too optmistic. It's only 29 right now. All the Japanese Maples were just begining to leaf out. Too soon to asses the damage there yet. For the second season the Lemon Wave hydrangea will be horribly set back. I think it's time to rethink that shrub's place in the landscape. The cold is bad enough here but the wind is unrelenting at about 25mph. We have four more days of this ahead.

19° here today.

But that's real measures, of course ;-))

A brief update: I'm pleased to say that the A. saccharinum seeds seem to be succumbing to the cold weather that we've had. http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c16/erniew/plants/AcerSaccharinumSeedsFrozen.jpg Unfortunately, so is the V. seiboldii 'Wavecrest' http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c16/erniew/plants/ViburnumSeiboldiiWavecrestFrozenFol.jpg And the Malus 'Red Jade' showing off fine spring color: http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c16/erniew/plants/MalusRedJadeFrozenFoliageAndFlowers.jpg Acer mandschuricum looks slightly better: http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c16/erniew/plants/AcerMandschuricumFrozenFoliage.jpg Pictured below is the way it should look. Viburnum cassinoides seems to be about the toughest plant in my yard: http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c16/erniew/plants/ViburnumCassinoidesFlowersAndFoliag.jpg Well, that and the Poa pratensis. You sutheners are welcome to the aire frio heading your way. You northerners can just keep what is yours!
