Ipomoea Indica plants sold in Japan

Houston, TX

I`m going to cross both of these after I get some cuttlings started. The one on the left is called crystal blue and the one on the right "magic blue". The morning glory seedlings are beginning to show up in some of the gardening shops here. Can you see any difference in the two plants?

Hi MGJapan,
VERY interesting that you have so many varieties to choose from in Japan.
I will be looking forward to seeing your blooms.
Your plants look VERY healthy.

I'm not a Blue Dawn expert, but I've never seen one with Heart Shaped Leaves -
and that isn't to say they do not exist!
HOWEVER, my BD has BOTH Tri-Lobed AND Heart Shaped Leaves.

We shall wait to see what the others have to offer information on your plants.

Thanks Emma,

There are gardening shops in any direction that you drive all over Japan because of the culture. I just got back from taking one of my morning glory growing tray to a shop near my home and they told me it`s time to transplant them in growing pots. I was going to wait until this weekend but might as well do it now. Also got the soil best suited for growing them. My wife found the indica plants. We grew some last year and she loves the big blooms they produce.

There's no visual difference between the two plants that I can discern at this point...

Ipomoea indica can produce trilobed and cordate leaves on the same plant...usually starting out with the cordate leaves and then progressing to trilobed...I.indica plants may have all cordate leaves but this is most often seen on strains from the pacific ocean area...

The cross pollination between different strains will often produce seeds, but not always due to some cross incompatibility factors of the pollen...

I've also noticed I.indica "Sapphire" for sale in Japan which has a color closer to the 'reddish' spectrum...

Hey Emma,

I purchased this one today at a local gardening shop. It's called "Ocean Blue Ipomoea indica"
So far I have 3 Ipomoea indica plants to work with.

Hey Emma,

I know you like the Ipomoea indica plants and I wish I could send you some therefore we'll do some tinkering and try and get them to drop seeds. That way I can send you some seeds from these plants.

I have two strains, one US origin and one from Spain, and am hoping for seeds too. Since it takes about 3 years for them to really develop an extensive root system and flourish, I don't expect the seeds this coming summer. I guess it is possible but unlikely.

Beth,

Last year we planted an Ocean Blue plant and grew and grew and spread all over my back yard like crazy. It took over our cherry blossom tree and covered the ground nicely too. They don`t self pollinate and therefore I`ll try doing it by hand. The whole plant produced maybe about 5 seeds which I still have. Also keep some cuttings before I cut the whole thing down and they are still in water inside. This year I have a plan if it grows like it did last year. Management control with a (Large trellis)

The Indica plants are growing fine. This is the blue flower one. I'm letting the vines grow long enough and then wrap them around the trellis. The Ipomoea indica plants are prolific growers and will fill this trellis up soon. Once I get the desired look I'll keep it trimmed. It should have flowers by next month if not sooner.

This is Ocean Blue. I have it in a larger pot and I'm using the largest trellis available because it will grow like crazy.

Yeah...I'd like to see one that is pink...the plants can produce lots of seeds the first year if they see compatible pollen...
