FREEZING TEMPs ,CROPS, ASAP

Shenandoah Valley, VA(Zone 6b)

BB, what's your last frost date?

Ours is May 9 and, wouldn't you know, two years ago we had a killing frost right around that day. It was a total shock to a lot of people.

So sad to read through this thread.

Hi Zeppy:

April 15th. I've looked at a 10 day forecast and don't see any freezing temps but I'm a little gun shy. I have about 500 plants to put out!

Wow! You covered your bases, huh!

Paris, TN(Zone 6b)

We lost only a few tops on some potatoes (plastic touched them I suspect). Everything that I left out covered with sheets appears fine. Still have a bunch of stuff to pull out of the garage so they can get some free water this afternoon.

I have a pretty small gardening area so I was able to get out and cover most of my stuff pretty easily. Boy, the azaleas sure look homely though, and the bumblebees are pretty confused trying to get some nectar from those melted little blooms :(

Anyone seen honeybees out yet? I have had bumblebees and giant megachilid bees for several weeks, but nary one single honey bee have I seen yet :(

Got lots here, thank God.

Alexandria, IN(Zone 6a)

Honeybees here.

Lawrenceville, GA(Zone 7b)

Funny you should mention bees.

I have been reading an awful lot of stories about the mystery surrounding the disappearance of honeybee hives across the world.

Good to see that you are seeing them

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

i've seen 5 of those black bumble bees today outside, and they were stuck to the plants, like hanging onto them for dear life. It was so windy here today the wind broke the greenhouse door and blew off all the black straps on the roof of the greenhouse. I left alot of plants laying over on their side so they wouldn't keep blowing over. WE have such high winds in the spring time. It's unreal

I went through a tornado and severe thunderstorm warning this evening I'll be glad for some warmer and dryer weather!

Rome, GA(Zone 7b)

Hope all is well there Indy. We had thunderstorm warnings here from the same front but they seem to have petered out. We got very little rain. The air is very dry here and the storms have been moving south of us.

Hi Jeff:

You didn't get much rain?

We got a pretty good dousing yesterday. I was able to put my flat of tomatoes out to get a badly needed watering

Yep it was weird, storms all around us but we didn't get much rain at all.

Manning, SC(Zone 8a)

I covered up my tomatoes (I just have a tiny patch) with what I thought was a cloth shower curtain. Maybe it had some plastic in it, or maybe it was just too thin, because the tomato leaves and stem tops that touched it got burned. Would the plants still be likely to come back, or should I just pull them out and plant new? They were looking so hearty before this weekend's heavy frost!!!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Snowed last night/early this morning. The last few weeks with days in the 70's did seduce a lot of people to plant out - but I planted out too early last year, went on travel and my DD forgot to cover my babies...lots of black goo for me to return to, LOL. So my one "sacraficial" basil and tomato for this year look like they got scarificed to the Snow & Frost Gods. I hope it apeases them as I have a lot (not nearly as many as BronxBoy!) of seedlings chomping at the bit to go out. Another storm coming this weekend. Maybe I'll try another set of sacrificials to see if I can push Mother Nature some more ;-) Green house! I need a green house!

Lawrenceville, GA(Zone 7b)

Me too Kmom!

Yes we must appease the Snow & Frost Gods.

They had an interview on NPR with a farmer in central Georgia who lost his entire peach, Pecan and Blueberry crop. It was really a heartbreaking interview. I guess it was really bad this year.
