More in specific Cryptomeria Japonica Spiralis and Chamaecyparis pisifera Curly Tops at reasonable prices for the plant and the shipping. Most places I find have outrageous shipping prices. THANKS
Where to find Cryptomeria and Chamaecyparis?
Up at the top of your screen is a tab called PlantScout. Click on that and cut and paste the plant you want into the space provided,
I did it for you for Cryptomeria japonica 'Spiralis'

That's a real quick way to find out which nursery is selling what you want.
Try www.mountainmeadowsdwarfconifers.com. They're here in western NC, so don't know about their shipping charges; but I've purchased several conifers, all in great health. Super selection and the nursery owner, Michael Balogh, is very knowledgeable and helpful.
"Curly Tops" is very attractive. I lost mine the first winter though and I have no idea why. It was spring planted and went into the winter months looking very good. It was DOA the following March. We had a fairly mild winter. If anyone knows the secret to this plant please share.
Snow cover? Just a guess, but the root system was probably not developed enough to survive the desiccating effects of the winter wind. I've been looking at buying dwarf conifers earlier today, can you tell? :0)
Pssst! Zone 7...pass it on.
Zone 7? What is that about?
Most of the State of Nebraska is a zone 4 but the lower half is a 5.

That's a little bit too cold for both Chamaecyparis pisifera and Cryptomeria Japonica even if you planted them in a protected site but there are people out there who like to push zones.
Question: Where to find Cryptomeria and Chamaecyparis?
VV's answer . . . Zone 7 (at least, that's how I read it!)

Oh, where to find them? Japan but Cryptomeria japonica can also be found in China.
Try Greer Gardens. It's in Eugene Oregon and their catalog is full of conifers. I had fun just looking thru the catalog, but you might find some varieties that would do well in your zone. By the way, I'm in zone 7 and have also had trouble keeping some of the cryptomerias alive especially this past winter. It's probably my fault for not watering or something during the winter, but it is discouraging.
Ok I see now find them in zone 7, meant where to mail order them from originally. All my searches have shown me curly tops is hardy 4-8 sometimes 3-8. I would be definately pushing hardiness on the cryptomeria. Somewhere and wish I could find it now I read that they hardiness zoning is getting changed. Because although NE Nebraska reads a zone 4 the new map will be a 5. Quite honestly its been a LONG time since we've gotten to -20 or -30. Thank you OutsidePlaying I will check them out.
Found it. The new map for the hardiness zones updated since the last one that was revised in 1990.

I have a number of Chamaecyparis pisifera cultivars in my yard and they all do just fine, without any protection at all. C obtusa is not hardy here, but pisifera is rock-hardy.
