Winter (In the North) not over yet.

Presque Isle, WI(Zone 3b)

Spured on by Scott's and John's delightful photos of flowering woodies and the fact that the pond was 3/4 open this morning, I broke out the canoe and nudged a fish crib made of dead spruce and balsam back into place. This evening I am greeted by a dismal weather forcast of winter storm warning tomorrow ( 4-10' of snow on N winds ) and Wednesday through Saturday lows at 11 degrees. Good thing I haven't yet moved out of the igloo to summer quarters. Keep those pictures coming. Nanook

You mean you haven't got those hardy Gardenia jasminoides Ice Cream™ planted yet?

So what to protect? I am gonna cover my japanese maples that have just about opened, but will these predicted low temps (into the mid to high 20s) do real damage to other trees with nearly open buds (probably fully open by now) like serviceberry, crab apple, kwanzan cherry, & kousa dogwood 'wolf eye'? Luckily the siting of most of my japanese maples, cornus florida, and even a star magnolia is winter shade, which has delayed their buds from opening (at least as of yesterday).

Panic has not set it yet. I REPEAT PANIC HAS NOT SET IN YET.

Hang in there Ken - it will all be worth it eventually - won't it?

HI Ken,

Any damage to the igloo from the 80F temps we experienced in mid March? I can't recall ever seening snow melt so fast in my entire life. They're calling for 2"-4" of snow this afternoon with 20-30 mph NW winds to go along with it for good measure. Yee ha!

It almost never fails. I've never considered robins to be a harbinger of spring. They just tell you when the next snow fall is. I saw my first robin on Monday.

Yesterday I was paddling on the pond and today I can't even see it for the snow: 4" and counting. The winter storm warning hasn't even kicked in yet and then the weather guys promise 3 days of lake effect. Looking on the bright side though, won't have to cover any emerging plants for those expected single digit temps.
