I think this is a Sargent's Crabapple, Malus sargentii.

This one too, although I'm not as sure.

And the Juddii Viburnums are just about to flower. This, folks, is the one shrub I'd take with me to a deserted island, if I were allowed only one shrub to take.

Edited to add: The fragrance of this shrub is so intensely beautiful. Sublime.

I am really amazed Scott that you are so much farther ahead than here. Is this early, late for you, or right on schedule? I had lots of redbuds in my old garden. In a VERY early spring they were out by maybe April 20 at the very earliest, normally come into full bloom about May 1, very cold spring might be a week later.

Of course, who cannot love a redbud in full bloom? Well maybe not against an orange or brown brick house. But heck, that's not the redbud's fault -- it's the house.....and its owners......(OK, don't shoot me, those of you who love redbuds planted against orange brick....some people like nails on a chalkboard too I guess ;o)).

BUT Scott, aren't you too supposed to get COOOOLLLDDD weather next week???? Not as bad as here I bet. But I have heard lows predicted for next Saturday ranging from 16F to 24F -- and all of those temps could do lots of damage. Who knows, maybe the arctic air mass which is heading into the midwest will stall somewhere between us and you. But I am worried about plants up here for sure

David,

We're VERY early this year, and, yes, it will get VERY cold later this week. Right now they're calling for a low of about 21F both Thursday and Friday nights.

Strangely, this will bode okay for the early stuff like most magnolias, pears, cherries, and forsythias, which are all but finished by this point, and will probably clobber the more prudent, later stuff like crabs, serviceberries, and viburnums! Such a strange year.

Scott
