We have a new cedar deck that is in dire need of some plants. The deck is quite exposed to the elements and really heats up in the summer ( we live in Vancouver BC Zone 8). We were thinking about 1 or 2 Japanese Maples and possibly some black Bamboo. Both would be in large pots. Any suggestions on types of J. Maples? And what to put under the pots so they can be moved for yearly deck staining? I've seen some rolling pot stands, but they look a little flimsy for a large pot with a small tree in it. I was thinking of a dolly used to move furniture?
Trees for hot exposed cedar deck
The dolly idea for moving the pots works with more than 1 person. As for plants - Black Bamboo is good but remember the height. There is also many, some nicer, types of bamboo for a deck. If you do the Black Bamboo I'd recommend trimming most of the lower leaves and branches to expose the stems. I've seen Japanese Maples burn in a situation like that but they are nice. How about a Palm (Trachycarpus fortunei) like the ones at English Bay. It'd do very well there. There's also Phormium (New Zealand Flax) which can make a nice container plant.

I agree on the Japanese Maples. They won't like getting cooked. But bamboo should have a grand time! Palms would look really nice too!
I would find a way to keep the pot off the surface of the deck. Though that may be hard with such large pots. But I have noticed that the pots sitting on the deck ruin the wood faster, even with a finish.
We have the same problem with out deck. Our plan is to build a very simple arbor and grow a flowering, vigorous vine. My uncle did that and used a grape. It's downright pleasant.
Thanks for the suggestions. We were thinking of putting the japanese maple beside the deck, rather then on the deck, a bit less exposure. Do you have any suggestions for a type of bamboo, that grow's quickly, and will work in a pot, besides the black bamboo?
Growin- would you mind recommending any good nurseries for bamboo, Japanese Maples and palms, as we are also in Vancouver BC?
Thanks
Try this one for Bamboo & ask him about palms: http://davesgarden.com/gwd/c/1972/
Many of the bamboo in PF I've added are in his yard. He'd know best where to get palms or there's always Home Depot for them. There is a good Japanese Maple grower that goes to the Sunday market @ Trout Lake - Otto but I can't remember the name of his nursery: http://www.eatlocal.org/Listing-I.html
There are others but they are typically expensive in the local nurseries.
thank you, we will check into those options
Hello....I have a spot in the front yard that receives non stop sun all summer long....We live in zone 8 and near the ocean,,,,I would like a shade tree of some sort that is very striking.
Any suggestions? Thanks!
You want striking? How about Acer negundo 'Flamingo' http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/78078/index.html
The pictures don't do it justice but it is variegated and comes out really pink in the spring. The neighbours will talk. It's not a whole lot on shade but it certainly is striking. I also think you're in a great spot for a Monterey Cypress 'Goldcrest' http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/76495/index.html - as it ages it develops a nice bold shape of the Cypress in Monterey, especially with a coastal situation.
Let me know more of what you were thinking. Check out these palms near the U district in Seattle I took yesterday.
