The pictures don't do it justice but it is variegated and comes out really pink in the spring. The neighbours will talk. It's not a whole lot on shade but it certainly is striking. I also think you're in a great spot for a Monterey Cypress 'Goldcrest' http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/76495/index.html - as it ages it develops a nice bold shape of the Cypress in Monterey, especially with a coastal situation.
