Magnolia Mystery

Peoria, IL

Last year we bought in some smaller container magnolias to shift up to a larger pot for this spring sales. There were a couple that I could tell were different just by the foliage and form and separated out. After selling about half of the crop last year, the leftovers came into flower a few days ago. Some are white, some are a nice light pinkish-white. Anyone want to hazard a guess on what we have on our hands? I called the vendor that we bought them from and they don't sell anything close but are checking into it. This is a back shot, showing more of the color.

Thanks in advance,
Ernie

It reminds me of pink Magnolia stellata

And a mysterious third party that I separated out last year because of form and foliage. I'm guessing 'Leonard Messel' on this one. White flower in foreground is 'Dr. Merrill'.

Growin,

Would that be 'Rosea' that you mean by pink?

Thanks,

I believe so. There's one in bloom somewhere near me but can't remember where I saw it. It is in everyway the same as stellata except for bloom colour. The bloom size & timing should be identical. In the nursery when you order them you'd get a mix of colours from real pink to almost white.

I agree with growin, that the first one looks like Magnolia stellata 'Rosea', but I don't think the second one looks like 'Leonard Messel'. The tepals on 'Leonard Messel' tend to be quite long(3"-3.5") and always floppy(ie. they hang out horizontally with the apical 1/4 to 1/3 hanging down readily exposing the stamens and follicetum). They are virtually never held in a cup or saucer shape like your photo. The tepals on 'Leonard Messel' also tend to be quite linear in shape(much like M. stellata), the ones in your photo look too wide(or maybe it's the angle of the photo?) Also 'Leonard Messel' has 12 tepals(I think I counted 13 or 14 in your photo).
