I'm sitting here enjoying my time on DG and I keep hearing this noise from across the room at the window like someone is throwing something at it to get my attention. I finally get up to look and there is the biggest wasp looking thing I've ever seen. It's over an inch long and making a loud buzzing noise. I run out of the room to get DH. He comes in and it's gone (of course) but as soon as it came back he saw it and says yeah it's big and yeah it looks like a wasp but it's outside and your inside so relax. Then I hear him go talk to his friend in Cali and tell him it's huge and looks like something out of a scifi movie and very freaky looking. Now this thing just keeps flinging itself against the screen then crawling around it buzzing. Sorry it's such a bad picture but it's thru the screen and not a chance I was going outside to get a cleaner one. Any clue what this is? We are already having wasp problems and I'd hate to think this is the daddy of them all...

It might be one of the Cicada Hunter Wasps. They seldom sting people, and their sting isn't as strong as most bees and wasps. They paralize cicadas and feed them to their young. Here's a Bug Files page with a few pictures:

OMG they are uglier in daylight based on those pictures. I already have a 6 year old DD who won't go outside due to the regular wasps...if she sees one of these, I'm sure you'll hear her scream all the way up there!
Thank you Claypa, I think that's it!
I am so happy to have stumbled across this post. Two years ago while on our school playground with a fourth grade class, we saw one of these in action. The children called me over to see an enormous wasp land on a cicada that was on one of the swing set legs. After a bit the wasp slowly flew off with the cicada. Someone at school had just seen a program on the Discovery channel and said they might be giant hornets from Japan. When I looked on the internet about these I got really creeped out!! Now I'm quite relieved to think that what I saw was likely to be one of these cicada killers. Whew!
I've seen that Discovery show and if it was one of those, I'd have to become BubbleGirl!!! ;-p
