Daily Pics #7
Resin:
Hugin and Munin are the two ravens of the most high god Odin. They fly all over the world and tell Odin about what they have seen and heard.
I believe naming them Hugin and Munin would be extremely inappropriate. Ravens where not the servants to the gods in the mythology on this side of the world. Ravens were god like in the mythology of some North Pacific coastal tribes.
I've seen this little Merlin twice in the last three days.

My Viking ancestry coming out ;-)
Interesting they are also god like for some North Pacific coastal tribes - do tell more! (new thread?)

Wow! Great shot!
Resin:
I'm not well enough versed in the Raven Mythology myself to discuss it, even though half of this household is Alaskan Native, Yup'ik Eskimo. Alaska's Native people are divided into eleven distinct cultures, speaking twenty different languages. However, there is a web site page: Raven in Mythology @ http://www.ravenfamily.org/nascakiyetl/obs/rav1.html Quoting from it: "Whereas ravens appear almost exclusively as signatory animals for deities in Europe, in the shamanic cultures of aboriginal North American tribes Raven appears as deity himself."
The Eyak, Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian share a common and similar Northwest Coast Culture with important differences in language and clan system. The raven is prominent in these cultures. Oh ladies, these were matriarchal cultures power and property where held by women and handed down through matrilineal descent.

Interesting, thanks!

Thanks Gardenpom!
There was finally some open water on Chester Creek where it flows into the lagoon, this evening. Lots of Mallard Ducks near the open water. To my surprise, there were also eight Canada Geese. It was near sun set and back lighted. I didn't notice them at first. Can you spot the Canada Geese in this picture?
Great shots Gary! I'm glad you posted that closer photo. At midnight, my eyes ain't what they used to be and I thought I was going to have to get out the magnifying glass! HAHAHA

Trying to catch up here - and all I can do is sit here, speechless. It's amazing - the photos get better and better!!!
I was going to post a hummer image, but after seeing Tigerlily's, forget it! I've never seen better photos anywhere - they belong in books, or National Geogrpahic!
Not to mention Marilyn's pelicans (I think that's what they are - absolutely astounding!), Pelletory's hawk, Gardenpom's variety, and Grasmussen's assortment.
Wallaby, love the Mallard's spread tail feathers - nice shot!
If I missed anybody, I apologize - it's so darn hard to cover everything when you've let things slide!!!
I'm beginning to feel the same way Murmur, after seeing those hummer shots.....I'm just hoping people enjoy seeing birds and it doesn't matter that we don't reach Tigerlilys' level! No picture to post, but the other day while waiting at a red light I saw an amazing sight.....I did not realize it at the time, but the large bird I saw flying overhead was a Magnificent Frigatebird!

Hey guys! I just got incredibly lucky w/ those hummer shots. I doubt I'll ever be able to get better ones, and it was all a total accident! I don't know my camera at all. ("Cause I sit watching the birds instead of taking the time to learn it) I've taken waaaaay over 1000 hummer shots since they returned (March 13) and most are not worthwhile.
I appreciate your thoughts and comments, but PLEASE don't let it keep you from posting your photos!
How cute! Nice pic tiger!
I'm so enjoying all these pics!
Once again tigerlily, some gem shots of the hummer, and that GC Sparrow, caught in the act! Blue tits take the buds off my nectarine tree, not that I ever have any of the few fruit stay on the tree.
Grasmussen, your shot gave me a giggle! They do look like they are performing a ballet act, audience couldn't stay awake!
Gras: Beautiful color in that photo!
