I have a beautiful tiger lily I planted last spring from my grandfather's property. It gave me a gorgeous bloom, then MANY bulbils. I let them fall where they would, and have about 5 plants growing in my bed now, but they are rather close together - less than 4 inches apart. Should I dig them up and move them now? They are about 5-6 inches high. And when should I split the bulbs of the older plant? Fall or spring?
When to split bulbs
Best to move in the fall after the stalks have turned brown and dried out. If you move them now, you risk losing this year's bloom.
I try to only move my liliy bulbs in the late fall. It's also the best time to plant most of them.
Thank you! This is my first attempt at gardening, and I'm excited about all of the plants poking through the ground this spring. I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions :)
bulbs, all bulbs are great things for new gardeners to grow. They are so reliable and generally multiply and come back year after year.. I am really enjoying my daffodils, grape hyacinths and tulips right now. Since I learned they need more than dividing once in awhile, and that they need fertilizer to produce big bulbs and therefore big blooms, I am having even better luck with them. They are a great thing to teach children to love gardening.
All God's children need food...
I have what I call 'lily grass' both from bulbils from various lilies and from pots of seeds that I plant without dividing till they are a couple of years old. Photo can follow when they start growing.
