Sasafrass

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

While waitign on the trashmen yesterday I decided to take a look at the fron t of the property to see if my wild specie s Iris were up yet to move some over to the Arboritum. While up there I noticed I have a 7 foot Sassafrass tre e up but it is right next to a tall Pine. There also three smaller seedlings just a bit away that I should be able to dig and move to another location, but can't for the life of me figur e out how to get the bigger one out.

Is there a safe way to try and dig this tree out from next to the Pine with out damaging the Pine? The Sassafrass alrady starting to grow up into the lower baranche s of the Pine. There only about three inche s between the trunk of the Pine and the Sassafrass.

The Sassafrass good for one of the butterlies so I don't want to lose it if I can and not sure what it would do to the Pine if I continue to let it grow there.

With their being that close together, sorry, no, it can't be dug out successfully.

Not only that, but sassafras are incredibly hard to move. Usually they are root suckers from a larger nearby tree and, the connection severed, they never survive the transition.

Edited to add: That said, they are relatively easy trees from seed and transplant well from containers. That might be the way to go.

Well fudge!!!!!!! So I wonder which one should I save. I got about Pines all scattered around but only have with the three in the front about 7 Sassafrass seedlings gowing around on property.

If it wa s your trees which would you save. Only other trees close to the too close trees is another Pine about 8' away and an old old Southern Red Oak which is not doign to hot about 15' away.

Gues s we was typing at same time Scott. If they that hard then should I take out the Pine and let the three Sasafrass grow up together there?

How big is the pine?

And what species of pine?

Chances are, both the pine and the sassafras could survive together anyway.

It a Pinus taeda, not one of the really nice pines, but it doe s provide shade and needles for mulch. The pine is probably about 15" or so. I a terrible judge with height s when lookign up.
