Eufaula - - - your little japs are tooooooooooooooooo cute! Oh my goodness, I love them. Makes me want some...........I don't have japs yet. :( And my bators are ALL full to the hills. Whew. I've got to tell you my NEW GOOD NEWS! Here's the tale:
I went in my bator room to do my usual 2:00 pm egg turning when out of no where I heard a little "peep", peeeeeeep" and knowing that nothing was to hatch until tomorrow night, I thought I was losing it. LOL I went to looking for where the peeeppp was coming from and my button (chinese painted) quail are hatching a day & a half early!!!!!!! Talk about brightening up my day! Wooooooo Hooooooooo, I broke off into a dance in the middle of the floor! (glad no one could see besides Gracee & Doodle) lolololololol SO, hopefully late this afternoon I can snap a few pics for you guys. They are the smallest things I have yet to sucessfully hatch. They are about the size of a bumblebee to give you a good reference point. SO CUTE. Exciting, exciting, exciting! I simply HAD to share with you all - - - - I knew you could relate! :-)

Oh WOW! TO EXCITNG Please do keep us posted, I love quail was thinking of getting some since there are no zone ordinances to stop me, like its holding me up from getting chickens - as small as a bumble bee how cool!
Nadine

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Oh Wow, Belinda, Are you doing your Happy Dance???? Button Quail are so adorable! I dont have any ,but have seen and held a couple. They would become addictive really quick! the only thing about them is their size, they would really attract predators here! I'd have to build something like Fort Knox to keep the mean old things out and my babies in!
Hey Nadine , you lurker you, LOL!!! Welcome , we love hearing from you! Whenever I read at the top of the thread, how many people actually post and how many have read the threads I wonder why so many never chime in! Come On Y'All, we know you are out there! Lets here from all of ya!
Tracey , My Japanese babies are now 2and1/2 weeks old. They were hatched on the th of March. They stay small for a very long time.Heres a picture from today! As you can see they are still only a bit bigger than they were 2 weeks ago! As You can see too, DH , didnt even wait to wash his dirty old hands before picking up, Mijikai,Happy Feet , and Suna(Japanese for sand) . Their not even a handful yet!

Eufaula you got it bad, LOL. We have about 46 quail and 4 pheasants. The pheasants have just started to lay eggies yesterday, we are hoping they are fertile, I have not see the male doing anything yet, but who knows. The eggs are a different shade of brown and small like a silkie egg. We sell our Bob White quail to hunters to train there dogs, and same with the pheasants. Thats how we feed our chickies through the year. So I can't get attached to them. Our quail have not started laying yet, we added the extra light 2 weeks ago and they should start laying in a couple of weeks. DH incubates a few hundred of them. I'll take a picture of there pen, nothing has gotton to them yet. We were so surprised that we didn't loose one quail through that long terrible cold spell this winter.

Eufaula,

How are all your babies doing? Did you find Duckies ;-)

Laura

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Well I left them for 3 days and DH took care of them while I tended My Mom! These little boogers have grown so much! They are feathering out great! Their little tails are starting to stand up now and the wing feathers are getting long and touch the ground when they walk. They are now 16 days old,and are the size of 2 day old regular size chicks!

How is your mom???? The chickens had a scarre of their lifes today we had a fire in the
coop and they made it out in time thank god they are all safe.....
Tracey

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Hey Tracey! Oh my goodness, a fire!!!!!! How did that happen?? hope all is well!
Thanks for asking about My Mom. She is recovering nicely, it was a close call though! I will be going back tomorrow for two days, to help out! There are 5 of us Children and grands too, so we are taking turns with her and Dad! They are in their 80's and we thought Dad was going to have a heart attack he was so distraught! But all is well now, just waiting for her to heal!

Robertsville, MO

Hope she gets better soon...The light in the coop fell on the staw
and started the fire but KB and I caught it in time.. Chickens are
happy know they are safe and new beding ... The straw and the
light got too hot and there was the fire one board needs to be replased. The coop was saved... 3 & a half hours clean it up not
fun.. No more light KB said the chicks are fine with out it they are
warm in their new boxes in the coop. The others are in theirs and
The silkies are on the floor a way from the wind.. We where at work. Thank God we didn't stop on the way home..

Hi Eufaula,

I loved the suggestion on the treat of apple and orange. I am a serious food pusher when it comes to people and pets and I am always wanting to "treat" the little chicks with something, as I do with my grown-ups. I promise, I'll do this in moderation.

As for chick bedding, I noticed folk putting hay and a type of matting in with their chicks. I'm currently using newpapers with paper towels on top and I believe I'm singlehandedly deforesting our environment this way. Can I put just plain wheatstraw in with them? What do you suggest? They are coming up on 2 weeks of age.

I have to laugh also. It took 3 of us to count our chicks, coming up with 3 different counts. We've settled on 27 chicks, even though I ordered only 25.

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Hey Cathy, I have now graduated my babies to play sand ,instead of paper! the sand will absorb the heat from a light and you can rake the sand over several times to mix in the Poo. the heat will dry the poo so no smell or sticky feet for at least 4 days!

Eagle Rock, NC

Great! Will do this today, when I move them into bigger accommodations. Wow! The first time I only had 12 chicks and they fit fine into my little heated hutch fine. These last few days find my chicks either multiplying or beefing up quite a bit (too many steroids?) They need more room NOW.

Robertsville, MO

Eu,
My silkies aren't laying eggs is their a speacil food for that???
8 Days no Eggs why me?????
Help me any one please..

I am a Mummy,
For the first time A A aaaaaaaaa I have forgotten everything I am so so excited, I cant remember what to do I have to read everything again,
Irene.

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

hi Tracey, Im not sure if your weather has something to do with the egg reduction or not, but just hang in there! Your chickens not only regulate egg laying by the temperature but stress and accomodations. Give them proper room and egg layer Mash and non stress for a while they will come around! E.

Hi Eufaula,
I have came down to earth now, I have Chick crumbs and feeders and a infra red lamp, Still just one has hatched so far, I have kept it in the incubator is that right? Hoping the others hatch, So everything is ready to feed it, It wont be to hot in the incubator I Haven't turned the temp: down or anything it wont fry will it?
Irene.

Freedom, PA(Zone 6a)

Weimac congrats on your new baby!! They are so much fun. Your supposed to leave in the bator, but sometime if we have a large bunch of eggs hatching we will remove a few at a time to the brooder so the other eggs can hatch in peace. I have a 18 eggs in the bator now and are due on Monday, so excited.

E, your chicks are so beautiful and growing so nice.

I have straw in with my babies because that's what mama was used to, she didn't like the newspaper or the paper towels so we removed them from her cage.

north yorkshire, United Kingdom

Cbrandenburg, yes I have left it in the incubator I keep looking at it, it's lovely, I have got a lot to learn so I hope all goes well.
Irene.

Freedom, PA(Zone 6a)

I know what you mean, I have a hard time staying away from the bator myself. Mine are not supposed to hatch until Monday and I've already peaked in the window of the bator 3 times this morning. Keep us posted.
