Anyone have pics of Weigelia, Wine & Roses ?

Claremore, OK(Zone 6a)

I planted two small Weigelia bushes last year but they didn't bloom the first year. Does anyone have any pictures of a mature bush with blooms ? I'd love to see what they look like in full bloom and larger than the 1 gallon size that I have planted. Something for me to look forward to when mine grow up.

Also, any tips to growing them for best blooms ?

I went to plant files and found lovely pics. Thank you all for sharing them.

Now if you have ideas helpful for such beautiful blooms ?

The second photo contributed by AnniesWeePlot is probably about right as these plants don't get much taller than 4'. Her plant will fill out and so will yours but they will need a little bit of time to do so given you planted them last year. They don't seem to do much the first few years but after that they take off pretty good.

If you choose to fertilize, now would be a good time and you might want to go easy and cut back to about half of what is recommended. I don't think new plantings need full strength.

Got some wine I can take photos of, but only in 75cl bottles, not the 1 gallon size.

In my opinion, W&R does require some pruning to keep it looking neat. I cut back the longest stems hard after flowering.

Here's mine, 29th May last year after 4 years. It is slow to move, I have only cut off weak and dead stems so far. The leaves do turn a darker purple later. I don't fertilise but have put plenty of organic compost on the ground.

The rabbits keep pruning mine for me. At least they leave some fertilizer pellets behind. :(

I gave mine to my neighbor. They seem to get some winter dieback here and I can't imagine them ever being over 4' tall.

No pictures, but my girlfriend has one, they generally look pretty ratty here too. You have a longer growing season, so maybe you won't be disappointed.

For best foliage color, they need full sun, but not harsh afternoon sun or it may burn.

For best blooms, look at the middle number on your fertilizer. All fertilizers have analysis numbers on the package. These numbers represent the percentage of each chemical the product contains of three macronutrients, N-P-K. A quick explanation is (N) nitrogen promotes foliage growth, (P) phosphorous produces flower buds, fruit, and root development, and (K) potassium builds strong healthy plants. To encourage flower bud production apply a fertilizer that contains a small percentage of nitrogen, a higher percentage of phosphorous, and a little potassium. Remember the golden rule of applying fertilizers. “Not enough, is always better than too much.”

PG,

I've never heard of that Golden Rule of Fertilizer before, but I like it! Now, I need to remember it and use it sometime. That'll be the hard part.

I must admit to never fertilizing, that is one of the scant advantages to having clay soil.

Here is one of mine with 'Little Princess' Spirea, Liriope spicata, unknown Dianthus, Heuchera 'Pewter Moon,' and Artemisia 'Valerie Finnis.'

Yes, very nice stress. Beautiful house and walkway as well. What's to 'stress' about?? How old are your Wine and Roses??

Fulton, MO

Thanks. Those have been in the ground 3 or 4 years.

So that's what rabbits are good for, leaving fertilizer pellets ;)

SoferSogood,

You sure that's Wine & Roses?

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Mr. Steve - that looks like Red Prince to me.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

You guys know better than me only I had the photo marked as "wine and roses" though maybe I had too many wines when I listed it. I am never sure what I have. I am just a poor cowboy living on the wind swept plains of the Big Sky country. If you are sure I can change my cultivar name. Thanks. Steve.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Steve - Wine and Roses will have the light burgundy leaves on it. I would say it's Red Prince - unless the leaves have any kind of varigation on them

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Yeeeee haaaaa. Rollem rollem cowboy. Red Prince thanks Al.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

No problem cowboy.

I only have French Lace here right now(below). I had moved my Wine and Roses to my neighbors and my Red Prince,Varigated and White Knights to my folks house. They needed more room, I really like the White Knights.

Has anyone tried Pink Poppet?

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

I haven't, that's a smaller one like Minuet?

Thornton, IL

Yes, a compact green-leaved pink-flowered shrub.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

I chased a Pink Poppet once in my youth. But she was a little strange. LOL
