Redbud Tree, no blooms this year...........?

Claremore, OK(Zone 6a)

I have a young Redbud tree that was planted 2 years ago. It is growing nicely.

It is generally the habit of these trees to bloom with the pink redbud flowers before the leaves appear. This year there were no blooms at all, and the leaves are now coming on. I guess that means no blooms for this year.

Does anyone know why it would do this ? It did bloom a little last year, it's first full year after being planted.

I was just wondering if anyone knew if I needed to feed it something, or why it would do that. I've never given it any kind of fertilizer, as they grow beautifully in the wild here. Maybe I should feed it. Does anyone know what it needs ?

Other than no blooms, it appears very healthy.

Just a thought but the flower buds would have been formed last year. We had some really rough weather last fall and maybe they were damaged by frost. Frosts that destroy your spring blooms don't necessarily destroy your leaf buds which might be why it leafed out fine but didn't bloom.

A few other thoughts- is that tree in shade and do you fertilize your lawn heavily?

Yes, we did have a harsh winter. Lots of folks lost all kinds of trees here from ice storm.

No, it's planted in full sun. We don't fertilize that area of our lawn at all actually. It's mostly yukky grasses that DH wants to do away with eventually and replace with bermuda grass.

You need to treat it with a product known as 'time', maybe a few years' worth, liberally applied.

Along the same lines as PeggieK, my redbud has kind of curly leaves. We had that ice storm in January then the freeze in April, could those have anything to do with it. Will it recover next year? These are wild redbuds that I left when I cleared for my shade garden last year, they are probably 3-4 years old. I had never noticed this before until the late spring freeze.

never heard of time but here the winter gets the blooms every blue moon. They are a native tree for us and really dont need anything extra at all just the luck of the year.

my redbuds bloomed slow the first year, but after that, it was business as usual.... beautiful blooms.
however.......
the buds are set the previous season and there were flower buds set --- that failed in the late winter freezes here. the buds withered and fell off.
watch your tree and shrub buds form the previous fall. most trees i have, i'm able to differentiate between the leaf buds and flower buds -- even as early as the late summer with my different dogwoods. after watching the buds for a couple of years, you should be able to get a feel for the differences between the flower buds and the leaf buds. then, when the late winter/ early spring freeze affects them, you'll know when and why.
no peaches this year either......

PeggieK:

We had beautiful Redbuds here in other parts of Oklahoma; maybe it is just too young to flower much.
Talk to it and enjoy the lovely leaves...I think they are pretty, too. Maybe it will flower for you next year.

This is our third year here. First spring the red bud looked good. Very few blooms last year. This year is like the first--a nice show. Never had a redbud before. Perhaps they have off years?

My little redbud bloomed very lightly for the first time this year - it's probably 7 years old from seed. I do believe time is the answer.
