CLOSED: Snake Id?

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

I posted here because the id on these is really bugging me.....lol, and I didn't know where else to post it. Maybe we need an 'other' id forum.

I thought these were Brown snakes, but with this close shot, I'm not so sure.

Not sure exactly what type of snake it is but I can tell you what I've learned over the past few months. Since it does not have a diamond shaped head, it's generally non-venomous.

I hope you're right because I really don't want to get rid of them. They don't seem aggressive, just always underfoot, it seems every time I'm in the garden I'll see one or two. At first, I thought it was the same one, now I'm wondering how many are out there, one is enough.

Flora, IN(Zone 5a)

I have the same snake here . Looked it up a few years ago, it's harmless(except to bugs) not aggressive and at least here does not get very large. I just saw my first one of the season yesterday. Always a good garden sign.

I think you have some form of De Kay's Brown Snake, Storeria dekayi. If you google it you'll find lots of info. It is harmless and eats snails, slugs and earthworms. It had started to disappear but with the reduction of pesticides it has made a comeback. I was thrilled when I found the snake frequently on my suburban property.

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

I have them all over the yard and in the greenhouses. Took one to the corp of engineers/game wardens office last year and they told me they just brown garden snakes and harmless. I picked up a pot in the greenhouse one time, one crawled out of the bottom into my hand(not on purpose on my part)never tried to bite and was very calm...it,not me...LOL

Lakeland, FL(Zone 9b)

its a brown snake but just remmber tho they are many poisionous snakes to with out the Diamond shaped head when in Doubt Run LOL

Ashdown, AR(Zone 8a)

Oh yeah phicks...I run anytime I see a snake...run...fall down...hurt myself..get up...RUN again! I'm getting to old for this ~~~~$;>}#}

fly_girl,
I picked up a pot another time that had a black widow on the side....again,unbeknows to me. Apparently I didn't squeesh her very hard because all she did was tap my finger to let me know she was there. Unfortunately, knee jerk reactions...I knocked her off the pot then beat her to a pulp with it.

Awww P, I know those knee jerk reactions! Life is tough for a spider or a snake. There's a ribbon snake in my yard too and he has a red tongue.....that's just creepy.

Lol phicks!

Hello Folks

I think that the snake may be a Night Snake. They are common in Texas and look similar to the brown snake. Check out this web site: //www.werc.usgs.gov/fieldguide/hyto.htm

Here is another web site for the Texas Night Snake: http://www.zo.utexas.edu/research/txherps/snakes/hypsiglena.torquata.html

I guess it's possible, except that mine are active during the day, maybe both, not sure.

I found a closeup pic of it, and it looks like it has these dark bands behind it's head, I don't think mine have those. It does look similar though.

Hello

I have a few of the night snakes in our area here in San Antonio had have seen them during the day if something has disturbed them. Could you maybe get a closer picture sometime. I think snakes are fastenating and I like to collect pictures for the grand kids.

Closer than that? I thought that was very close lol

I'll try.

Thanks. The snake isn't a poisionous one so you don't have to worry about that. It will probably be more scared of you than you of it.

Dee

I'm scared of snakes, but I'm thinking my garden would be healthier if I had some. Honestly, the weeds were so overgrown after winter that I half-expected to step on a snake every time I tromped through! Your snakes are pretty cute. And since they eat slugs and snails I'd be happy to have some in my garden. Unfortunately, it seems most snake places specialize in selling exotics.
