Bauhinia question?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Here is the tree we saw today in our area...took pics and then the nice couple came out and offered me a 6 month old tree from the ground. It has a tap root about 3 feet long. Because I am in zone 9a, I think I may need to let it grow in a big pot to protect it for a few years...but, what do I do with the tap root??? being that long??? I am afraid to put it in the ground as it is not big enough.....I will post the tree, the bloom and then the small plant her husband dug up for me.

Betty, if it were me I would just plant it where it is going to grow, and mulch really well, maybe water it in with a good root stimulator.....my feeling is if it cam up on it's own then it is most likely aclimated to your climate already and would be fine in the ground. But that is just me...I don't baby many things..lol It is beautiful by the way....I wish it would survive in my zone!

I think if you put it in a pot, that root is going to go round and round. I would put it in the ground, but I would rig up someway to give it some artificial shade for awhile. The hot sun will cook a new transplant like that.

You people are great!!! I have a nice spot for her in the ground..and, in the winter she can have her very own protection from the north wind and cold....thanks again....
