got seven son flower ?

Wayland, MA(Zone 6a)

I have a seven son flower that I ordered 2 years ago . It was just a little twig and has grown to be taller than me but only one stem that devides into two leaders like a wishbone I am trying to figure out if I need to give it more time to develop multi stems or if it is not happy in its present spot. it has had only a few flowers not the flower laden branches that I see in the descriptions and plant files. it is in full sun but sort of dry soil . I could move it into the front bed but it would be near the street and in full sun but in moister soil
what do you think?

Mine grew slowly as well. It then seemed to take one year - about the third or fourth year - and began to develop multiple trunks. I would be patient. It's a fantastic plant - one of my faves. Here's a photo of mine. Good luck!

beautiful! I bought this little plant when I saw one at tower hill botanical garden in boylston ma . it was grown as a tree and I saw it in full bloom it was magnificent but it was more like the shape of a dog wood . ps How do you do that link a photo from plant files to a post?

Hi Laura,

Just find that page in PF and copy the url at the top of the browser. Then paste it in your post.

It appears, from inspection of my plant, that the grower cut it back to about 10 inches when the trunk was about 3/4 inches in diameter. It has 5 trunks now.

I was wondering if I should do something like that . I wish I could find a resource for pruning young plants for shape none of my pruning books really go into it and I tend to want to buy things when they are young and cheap!

Pruning is what I do to all of my trees, shrubs etc. When young you can shape it to what ever you want. Look at the mature specimen's tendencies and chose the bud direction you want when selection of cut location. Have the "leader" quite a bit taller than the laterals or chose the leader you want and shorten the other. Kind of fun pruning for effect. Flowering trees I usually wait until after flowering. But I still do the first few prunings for shape regardless.
