What I've Been Up To

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

It was nearly 70 degrees here today and I unearthed some lilies I had started in the basement under lights in February, one of them is "Purple Prince". I had started them in this little greenhouse thingy I had gotten for my birthday last fall. They were soooooo tall I had to dismantle the greenhouse in order to get them out safely. Here they are....

Then there are the brave little lilies close to the house that are peeking their heads out.

It seems like Buggy Crazy has smart lilies, none of hers have peeked out yet. Perhaps it's the shock of going from zone 8 to zone 5.

Here's the little greenhouse. It got nice and hot in there today.

Neat Mags! do you tie off that little greenhouse? I'd have to have it secured somewhere or it would be blowing in the wind..

That's what DH said, especially since we are expecting a storm tonight. He says it'll take off like a kite. Yikes! That would be a very bad thing.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Yes, that would be a very bad thing. Batten 'er down! ;)

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

That happened to me a year or so back (taking off like a kite). Broke one of my favorite planters. Maybe you can put some heavy weight on the bottom shelf.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Very cool little greenhouse!

Southern, WI(Zone 5a)

Thanks guys, it isn't much (the greenhouse) but I am enjoying the little bugger as it heats up. It's amazing what all that heat and humidity does in very little time. Bought some bare root clematis, just to try and they have really taken off, just today. I'm afraid that this just magnifies my want for a real greenhouse, which is what I warned DH.

Saint Bonifacius, MN(Zone 4a)

Our best alpine seed grower in our Rock Garden Society has had a mini greenhouse just like that for 20 years. She loves it.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Mags, I have the same greenhouse, have had it for 3-4 years and love it. In the winter I bring it inside and use it, then put it outside in the spring. I tie it to the deck rails with bungee cords as it has taken off like a kite once or twice. This has worked great for the last 2 years and have not had to pick up plants, pots, or chase the elusive greenhouse-kite!
BTW your "babies" are gorgeous!!!

I have used this greenhouse inside with lights. I am the ultra paranoid type (hate to admit it), with my love of lilies AND of cats. Last year I had all of these lilies in pots under lights out in the open, no cat bothered them. Now that I know of the danger of just one grass-like seedling and kidney failure, many of my lily projects have gone in the greenhouse...inside. I have one cat, now, that I know eats all sorts of things that I was completely UNAWARE of, so it is best I play it safe, thus the greenhouse indoors has come in very handy.
I have some very heavy pots in the bottom rack and twine will have to secure it for now, until the bungie cords arrive.
I still can't believe that it was 75 degrees here today and I am already for my spring lilies to come and be planted, we finished adding to one of my beds today (or should I say DH did ;0) ) Thought that Faraway Flower order would need to be fridged while I waited for the thaw. Yee-hah! I'm-a-ready!
Thanks for your kind words everyone. I just love spring, don't you?

Mags...I cheat! LOL Bought 2 bulbs of Brasilia on ebay and planted them in a pot on Feb. 22nd.(too cold to be outside here) Stuck the pot in front of a window and this is what they look like today......

Pixie, that's a nice selection to have "cheated" with a window grow. Lovely!

Thanks Mag,
I do it every year....I get cabin fever and can't wait to smell the lilies so I plant some in a pot in Jan or Feb. Sometimes I time it just right and get blooms for Easter. Last year I planted "Sea Treasure" and it bloomed beautifully! Here's a pic:

I love that "Sea Treasure". It's one of my favorites. I first planted it last year, a very delicate, beautiful flower.
That first picture is my pot of starts from Feb. 2 Purple Prince, a couple of Concd'Oro and one more that will surprise me, as I have forgotten what it was.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I'm not familar with Purple Prince....is it dark purple of Lt. Purple?
I bought 3 Purple Sensation but they haven't arrived yet, along w/Angelique and and Salmon Star. Last fall I planted Concd'Oro along with these:
Granny

Traveler

San Souci

Space Mountain

Desert Flower

Lavender Gem

Naomi

Tropical Isle

Dream Catcher

Harbor Star

Rose Sonnet

Princess Melissa

Lilium Uchida:

Albany

Luxor:

Oriental Mix bought 10

Strawberry Shortcake:

Then I bought a bag of 6 spotted oriental mix.
I can't wait till they bloom!!

Pixie-Did you by chance find B & D Lilies? They have some of the most wonderfgul quality bulbs that I have ever seen. You have a great selection there! You will be amazed this summer.
Purple Prince is nothing I had ever seen before online or offline, so it was called an OT and looks to be a very dark color. Here's the thread I started when I saw it. Had wondered if anyone out here had heard of it.

I hope you post pictures this summer here. It will be lovely. What a summer you have to look forward to!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I did find B&D lilies, and Buggycrazy and Mainiac. LOL Now you know why I got so carried away!!!! I already had a "few" that I had bought over the years, but couldn't resist the selection they all had.
Purple Prince looks to be a redish-purple, very pretty!
I have Arabian Red and it is much more red than your picture. I have it planted with Dizzy and Siberia and it's stunning.
Here's a photo of A.Red & Siberia from last summer:

Pixie, oh my, you did hit the goldmine BIG when you hit it ;0) I love the contrast of your A. Red and Siberia too. Lily season has great promise, doesn't it?
