Cryptomeria japonica

Atmore, AL(Zone 8b)

I was at Lowes yesterday and they had a large quantity of these 1-2ft trees for sale. I'm assuming they would mostly be used for privacy screens (like Leyland C.). Anyone know if these trees would reseed heavily like Red cedar? And, will they stay branched to the ground?

Reseeding will be uncommon to rare (it is known, though). It will stay branched to the ground in full sun, but not in shade. And it can get huge (70m tall in Japan).

Here's what they get to look like, with age . . . they know how to do avenues in Japan!

My tree is growing like a banshee. Beautiful foliage and shape. Lots of cones, but no volunteers yet.

Wow those trees are huge (the pic too- lol)! They must have good resistance to typhoons to be able to get that big. They almost look like giant sequoia.

Great photo Resin. Have you been to Japan to see their conifers? Do you know if that allee was planted for forestry or for aesthetics?

Hi Willis,

Nope, never been there (but would like to go!). That avenue (what's an "allee"??) was planted for religious purposes, avenues seem to be an intergal part of Shinto temple grounds.

What cool looking trees! Would young ones be likely to take root and grow okay if planted between two mature (deciduous) trees this time of year? How much direct sun do they need?

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Hi DSM,

They prefer full sun - growth in shade is thin and poor, not very attractive

Resin, maybe its just a language thinga-ma-jig and we are talking the about the same thing, unless the avenue is a term specifically used for the ones leading to Shinto temples or shrines (or I am misspelling it).

I would say an allee is a formal design with trees lining both sides of a drive or path. Avenues are for cars and big trucks. No place for a shrine.

Hi Willis - does look like a language thing, what you define for an allee, is how I'd define an avenue.
