Minature Gardenia Question

Manning, FL(Zone 9a)

I was trimming my mini gardenias and pulled several branches that had a good root system. I've tried just planting these back in the ground but I lost every one of them. Does anyone know how to keep them alive? I've got them in a bucket of water right now and I just pulled them up yesterday. Any help would be appreciated.

They probably don't have enough roots on them to support all the green growth on top--you might try cutting back the top part so that it's proportional to the amount of roots that it has. And I would treat it like a recently rooted cutting and protect it from extremes of heat, cold, sun, etc until it has a little time to get established.

Someone told me to cut every leaf off by half, enough leaf will be left for feeding the roots, but not so many that the plant can't take care of them. Haven't tried it myself, but you may want to give it a try.

I'm off to trim them right now. Thanks for the info

Definitely keep them out of the hot sun.

Cuttign the leave s in half change s the plants photosyntheic properties and it cause s the plant to make more roots instead of making sugars and such and making more leaves. Do on alot of plants with big leaves only. Nevr tried it on somethign as small as a Gardenia leaf.
