Here's an arty pic of silkie chicks ( say that 5 times fast!!) I took a couple of years ago when I had my first group of chickens.
Broody Silkies
Tracey I can't tell by the picture, LOL. How old are your Barredrocks?
Backyardhens your chicks are so cute. I know what you mean about getting things done on off days and supervising, LOL. Since your already counting down 18 days, he needs to get started soon. What kind of chicks did you order?
Cathy
They are 13 weeks but will be 14 weeks saturday..Those silkies are to cute and just love the color in them!!! I can't wait to get mine soon.... But I'm waiting!!!! 3 silkies 1 male, 2 females.
Full size .... I called the bus driver and asked what time and she
said when she gets home she's goeing to ketch them 3 silkies to bring them today !!!! Tracey
How old are your silkies???
Tracey
My silkies are here!!!!!
*Yay!* What colors are they?
Cathy, I'm ordering 2 auracaunas, 1 cuckoo maran and 9 SILKIES :) Straight run! So I can start to breed them next spring. YAY!
Tracey My silkies are 1 year old, they were born on April 4th last year. These babies were born on April 2, I was surprised when I check the dates from last year. Your going to love your silkies, they are so personable and sweet.
Backyardhens, you are going to have so much fun with those silkies. I have 14 Ameraucana eggs in the bator, I can only keep 4 maybe 5 at the most. I think I've found someone local to take the others, YAY. Cuckoo Maran are also on my list to get one day, they lay really dark eggs. Heck I would like to have some of all chickens I see, LOL. I need to move to a farm.
My last litte baby born has 3 toes like the Bantam but it has the feather going down like the silkie, I can't wait to see what the baby looks like when it grow up. I'm guessing it might be small like the bantam, but look like a silkie. The other 2 are picking on the last baby, but she/he gets under mama when they start that, they are picking her toes. I have decided to wait to name them because I don't know if there roosters or hens, right now I just call them Babies.
Cathy
Cathy,
How is your silkies doing????
Tracey
Cathy,
I have 1year old and 2 year old silkies and was wantting to know
when will they lay eggs for me? All 3 are in a corner and are sarred of me!!! 2 females and 1 male....
Tracey
Great pics Cathy. Those silkies are simply gorgeous. And, Backyardhens, your artsy pics is too cute! I know you are so excited about getting your new babies.
Tracey, give your silkies time to settle in. It may take them a few days to get used to their new environment and surroundings, and new mama. After they settle down, you might want to add laying mash or oyster shell to their feed rations, as both help them to have strong, healthy eggs.
Wish all of you a very Happy Easter!
Belinda
Like Belinda said, they will take some time to get used to there new home. When they do you should start getting eggs. My silkies are doing great, they are still tiny, but growing. Mama dumps all the food out of the container for her chicks, I have a chick feeder but she want the food on the bottom of the cage. I check often to clean up any poo mess they might have made. I should have a few more hatching maybe tomorrow or Monday, I need to candle them again, it's been very cold nights. But mama #2 got her act together and they should hatch. I'll see if I can get some new pictures today, they are not hiding as much anymore. I do feed my girls oyster shells along with there own eggs when I get to many, I just hard boil them and smash them, silkies love there eggs.
Happy Easter!
Cathy
Thank you cathy ,
What would I do with out you ladys????
Tracey
To funny LOLOLOLOLOLO!!!! To cute!!!!!
Tracey
Today I gave the babies a treat of mashed up eggies, they loved them just like there mama. Mama ate them right out of my hand like she always did before the chicks arrived. I was happy to see that, because she's been nipping me every chance she gets. If we pick up one of her babies she's not happy and gets all excited, the babies chirping makes her crazy, she wants them back. I can't wait to see how the others handle the new kids in the coop. I'm going to wait until it warms up before taking them back to the coop. I just heard on the new that we might be getting more snow on Monday, there talking inches, YUK. Where is Spring?
I hate snow and Its saposto get flires saturday Yuck.. I hope spring will hery up soon!!! My silkies are on strike at the momint
and I would like soom eggs from them because I want to try and
hatch babys from them and for a freind too.
Why are they on strike???? No eggs for 8 days now.. PHOO.
Tracey
Tracey, It's not unusual for the smaller breed chickens to be slow to get started laying. I have some bantams that are more than a year old, and they are taking their sweet time too. Also, my smaller chickens seem to be more bothered by stress than the larger chickens. If they are stressed about their new environment, they may not lay until they get more used to it.
Do you know if they had laid eggs before you got them ? Since they are 1 and 2 yrs. old, I just wondered if they had laid before.
Everything seems to affect mine. They won't lay if they're stressed, they don't lay good if it's a cloudy for several days in a row, and they won't lay in the cold weather. Picky little Divas arent they.
Hopefully yours will lay soon.
cbrandenburg, those sure are some cute little ones. Thanks for sharing all the pics with us. We love it.
Isn't it fun watching the babies with the mama ? It's so funny how they watch every thing she does and are right in her face...........almost as if to ask,
"whatta we do now, Mama, whatta we do now ?"
And I love how she "talks" to them. making that funny clucking sound that's so different from their everyday clucking.
I had one hen go broody on one egg last year. It was so much fun to watch how she cared for her one new baby.
Congrats to the new mom. She sure is pretty.
Peggy, Silkie mama's are great, I love the way she talks to her babies, so sweet. In the evening when they are ready for sleep she tucks them in her wings and they pop out there little heads, so cute.
PeggieK,
Yes they have laid eggs before and I have gotten them from my sons bus driver.
She told me they have laid eggs...
Tracey
cbrandenburg, thats so cool that they cuddle like that and it sounds like momma loves her babys..
To cute... LOLOLO
Tracey
Tracey, if those chickens have laid eggs before, I'm willing to guess they will again before too much longer. They probably are just out of sorts about the relocation of their home and all that's been so new to adjust to.
Once they're convinced they are safe in their new environment and start to get themselves all comfy and cozy, they should lay eggs if they are healthy.
When you get that first egg, It will feel like you're a little kid who just found the prettiest Easter egg. So fun and exciting.
Good luck............hope it's soon.
peggiek ,
Thank you.Tracey
