seed growing

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Hi Elaine

I use No-Damp sparingly to prevent/stop damping-off, but I try to minimize the use of poisons in my house. Another answer: add a teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) per litre of water and use the solution when watering your seedlings. And if you can, always bottom water (let the seed container stand in the solution until the soil mix is wet, then drain). This prevents the seed or seedling from getting dislodged, and helps stop the soil from compacting.

Havelock, Canada

Hi Lee Anne!

Thanks for popping in and giving me the big howdy. Havelock seems to be a good place to pass through. Sure wish the passenger trains were running again but I do love the sound of the freight trains. Of course Havelock is known for its Jambouree! It is crazy here at that time of year.

Thanks for making me feel welcome.

Hi Elaine!

I'm not on the Hwy. 7 route, but I cross it every day going down #4 on my way to and from work in London :-)

There are lots of members from Ontario here in the Canadian Gardening forum. It's nice to finally have you hanging around here with us.

Edited for missing words :-)

OMG! we've shopped Marg's shoes when our kids were younger...

IL's from *****, that's something I understand, completely........ ;)

Hi there, Elaine. About time I stopped in to say welcome. My hubby travels through Havelock on his way to Toronto every week, he'll be happy to hear Timmie's is coming! Last year we went through on our way to Peterborough on Canada Day long weekend, next time I'm going through I'll give a big wave, 'kay?!

Erynne & Andy, thanks for the damping off info!

Sandy

Elaine,
We got 51 acres in Parham, geographic township of Hinchinbrooke, now Township of Central Frontenac. Actually, my land is not too far from Sharbot Lake! We often take hwy 7 vs. the 401 as it's more of a scenic route......plus I won't do the 401 (chicken!).

Ann, I will be looking up those recipes for tomato sauces. I gotta quit cooking from a jar and be a little more self-sufficient.

To get back on topic on Rob's thread here, I'm also starting lotsa Morning Glory seed. I've been scouring the internet for seed of other MG cousins. I'm going to have another addiction I fear to go along with my hosta addiction.
I've started:
Sunrise Serenade
Grandpa Ott's
Candy Pink
Heavenly Blue
Flying Saucers

and there are no doubt going to be more to come.
Between you all and me, I think Grow_Jo has a worse MG addiction starting than me....running & ducking

White Lake, ON(Zone 4b)

Oops, sorry, Robert, you know how we can get rambling on! I just started my sunflower seeds yesterday and put some small bamboo stakes in my Purple Hyacinth Bean and brought them upstairs in the big sunny window. The hostas and other seedlings under lights are looking swell. Hope they are for you too.

*whispering to Erynne* I think Grow_Jo has a very appropriate name, eh? ;-)

Havelock, Canada

Hi all~~~~~~~~

Can't tell you how happy I am to connect with some DGers
in Ontario and Canada.

Robert - Are you the same Robert who is such a sweetie that has been in Parking Lot chat in the past that I've spoken to? I have a terminal case of addling of the brain so forgive me if I'm mistaken.

YIPEE!!!!!!!!!!!!I now know of more than two DGers from Canada.

Erynne - I have been through Parham a few times.

Sandy - What were you doing in Peterborough on a holiday weekend? That is my hometown and my large family DM and the huge gang of siblings, their spouses, nieces, nephews, great nieces, nephews, cousins etc. etc. all live there.

Hi Elaine, I wanted mainly to go to a Hosta Fest put on by Gardens Plus in Peterborough and I also stopped in to tour Jim Spence's hosta garden, which was the absolute highlight of the weekend for me (sorry, hubby!) as I'm a tiny bit of a hostaholic. We took in the Canada Day celebrations which I think was in conjunction with the Festival of Lights with concerts and fireworks right on the waterfront. It was great even though it rained a wee bit!

Sandy and anyone who is interested. For The Love of Gardening is on this weekend Fri night, Sat and Sun. I have plans to go on Saturday as it is on from 10 am until 6 pm (I think) and the speakers are always fabulous not to mention all the eye candy. My back may prevent me from spending the whole day there but I'm gonna give'er a try! It is in Peterborough at the Evinrude Centre on Monaghan Rd. South is anyone is interested. You can google it is interested.

Ha! I do read this thread ya know. MG addiction indeed! I only have 24 of them growing, eh? Ummm, ok and about 10 varieties I can't even start inside because I don't have any more room under my lights. Oh yeah, and did I mention I've wintersown some too?
LOL
(Erynne you are just as bad, and you know it girl).

Joanne

Edited to add: anyone want some MG seeds? Seriously, dmail me. I have a few to spare and would be happy to share. heh heh.

Ha yourself! I only have 15 actually started, so whooooo has it worse! Okay, okay, I do have two more types soaking right now and a couple of people are sending me some really funky MG seeds and I have an order coming from France for:
Merremia umbellata
Ipomoea quamoclit White
Ipomoea coccinea Var. aurantia
Rivea corymbosa
Stictocardia beraviensis

You got me beat on the WS'd MGs though!

Oh you should see the funny-looking climbing apparatus I made out of a coat hanger.....I'm gettting desperate I think.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Ooooo. MG seeds from France. Well, I'm getting some from Japan, so there (sticking tongue out). LOL.

Hey - can ya post a picture of your coat hanger trellis - my DH made me a bunch of spirals from coat hangers a couple of days ago. I'll post a pix when I get home.

Joanne

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

I've got nothing fancy, but I just peeked at the seeds I started a few days ago. One variety of tomatoes was really quick to germinate and the basil seeds have done so quickly too. Also have my MG seeds - just an ordinary blue variety - started and a couple are putting up growth. (I DID soak them first.) Erynne - where do you grow all those varieties? I run out of space for the ones I have.

Ann

comebychance, NL(Zone 5b)

violaAnn.you running out of space to ,im started on my mothers window sells now.
Cant talk the wife in putting your boys in brarding scool for a wile lol.
so had to strike a deal with mom she gets some plants for the space and looking after
them will thats fare.

(Zone 6a)

Erryne, where did you order your French seeds from? And I'd love to see your coat hanger trellis. I made a sprial out of one for an MG I have growing on the kitchen counter under a florescent light....it even has a bud on it.

Like alot here, I also went all out on the MG's this year.......let me see....I haven't counted but I would say I have over a dozen types......but don't ask where they're going, cause I don't even know!

Nice MG Steven; which one is it?
Here's a pix of the MG spirals my DH built out of coat hangers for me. The only downside is they take up a lot of space.

Joanne

I'm hoping I can get away with letting my MGs sprawl until they go into the ground. Even though I swore I would learn my lesson from too many seedlings last year, I really don't have the space!

Not entirely my fault. I took on a project with the community association to do some planting to beautify some dismal areas in Centretown Ottawa. Can you guess who is going overboard?

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Hi Andy,

Do you need any plants for those areas in Centretown? I have about a gazillion Balsam and Four o'clock seeds. Also lots of Lavatera and Calendula.

Ann

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Ann, thanks for the offer! A little of each would really help. As I said, I'm running out of space for indoor germination, but I can sow most of the things you're offering directly.

Getting the seed: Will you be at our concert (Carmina Burana) next Saturday? Or seeing Betty L?

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

I could sow some of them for you. I do have some space for seeds - have not started so many this year (I learned from last year). Could send the others. Ottawa Chamber Orchestra has dress rehearsal on Saturday and concert on Sunday. Concert conflicts with OSO viola sectional, but I'll see Betty L at OSO string rehearsal on Monday evening. But that's AFTER your concert. We can work out something. Which ones would be best for me to start. I'm thinking maybe Lavatera or Balsam. They are least likely to have self-sowed outside.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Ann, I'll send you a Dmail. Thanks --A.

(Zone 6a)

I like your spirals Joanne, aren't they handy? What MGs are you growing this year? The one in my pic is Heavenly Blue. It's got a big flower bud on it now, hehe :)

Steven

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Hi Steven, I've got several of each of the following MG's growing:

Star of Yelta
Cameo Elegance
Flying Saucers
Double Sunrise Serenade
Scarlett O'Hara
Mixed Colors
Scarlet Star
Candy Pink

I have a bunch more seeds (including Heavenly Blue) but no place to start any more right now. You'll have to post a pix of your baby when it blooms!

Joanne

(Zone 6a)

I'll be sure to get a pic of my baby.
I only have a few MG's started now,
they are:

Ipomoea turbinata
Heavenly Blue
Sunsmile pink
Ipomoea carnea
and Scarlet O Hara

and theres a bunch more I haven't started yet.....

Please translate MG/ To someone who grows mainly lilies/iris and perennials, Mg means master gardenrs so..... what is MG that grows? Am sure someone will make me feel a fool.

Morning Glory :))

Orangeville, ON(Zone 4b)

Sorry everybody for bailing on the conversation........4 kids + weekend away = no time for me to play on DG.
Ann, I'm going mental with running out of room for all my seedlings. Plants up to 6" stay in my plant room on all the shelves (3 light system). Anything up to a foot tall goes in the laundry room where I have another light set up. Everything else that's getting really tall, including the bigger Morning Glories, are upstairs in the living room getting natural daylight from my window. Pansies line the window sill in my kitchen too! It's been nothing but the "move around" game here to please all these plants......but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Steven, my order from France was placed with this company:
http://www.barbadine.com/pages/argyreia_nervosa.htm
If you order, just send an email listing the items that you want so that they can confirm that they have everything on your list. Once that's done and you get a response, send along your info (name/address) and they send you a link to pay via credit card by a company called PayBox. It's super easy and the owner is very helpful & responsive. Oh yeah, you need a minimum order of 7.5 euros and the shipping is 2.5 euros no matter how many seeds you order.

I really like your spirals better than mine, Joanne & Steve. I did the one so far to see how it would work out and it's okay right now. I didn't know how to bloomin' anchor it so I wrapped it around the pot and made it so it would "clip" on and off. I also used duct tape to make sure it stays put. I guess I was worried about the coat hanger rusting if it were staying wet in the soil.......oh well, there's me over analyzing again.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Your spiral is great Erynne - it gets the job done, right? I sure hope we can get those morning glories out in less than a month - can you imagine how big they're going to be??? They'll take over our houses! LOL. I'm hoping they'll do ok here; apparently they don't like cool nights, and we definitely get those here in the summer. I'm planning to plant "back up" vines with the MG's when I put them outside in case they don't work. Sweet peas, canary vine, etc.

Are your MG's that are getting natural light only doing ok?

Joanne

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

For gardeners, MG can be Master Gardener, Morning Glory or Miracle Gro.

I've hear that your first reflex thought on what "PC" stands for can say a lot about you: Politically Correct for the socially concerned, Progressive Conservative for political junkies, Personal Computer for those of us tied to keyboards, and President's Choice for Canadian grocery shoppers 8~)

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Good one Andy!

There's a few of us who have posted to this thread who also hang out in the Morning Glory forum where it is common to refer to Morning Glories as MG's. Much quicker to type! Sorry for the confusion!

Joanne

(Zone 6a)

Ooo, you spiral looks good Erynne! It looks much taller then mine. I wound mine tightly so it would fit on the counter.
I think I'm going to have to utilize the florescent lights in the office at work to start some of my seeds...Morning Glories, ect.
Hey, they said we can put a plant on our desk...........but they didn't say how many :) Heh heh heh

Steven

(Zone 6a)

BTW, Thanks for the link Erynne...............although I don't know if I should dare check it out............I already have enough seeds to turn my entire neighborhood into a botanical garden. I work downtown, so I've been keeping an eye out for any spots to do a little guerrilla gardening :)

Orangeville, ON(Zone 4b)

Joanne,it (the spiral thingy) gets the job done but it's right ugly, haha. I had a heck of a time shaping it. I'm going to look for a smaller guage of wire and I'm thinking I might have some from jewelry making days that might be strong enough.
So far I have no complaints from my MGs getting daylight only....no fading or whatnot and there growing fast. They're in a SW facing position. If they do start showing any signs of decline, back down to the laundry room they'll go where I can raise the lights so that they can have 4 feet of growing space. If you look beyond my spiral and to the upper right, you can sorta see some of the MG gang.....they're still green and growing after a week watching the neighborhood!
I hope they do well for you after all the effort you're putting in to growing MGs. My great Aunt is in Edmonton and I don't know how different the climate is there compared to where you're at, but she has them growing along her fence and they appear, from the pics, to be quite happy.

Lol Andy, so true! Before I ever gardened in earnest, mg to me meant Magnesium (from my pharmacy days) and PC meant President's Choice!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Erynne - my hubby made the spirals for me by wrapping the hanger-wire around a soup can. Keeps them kind of compact and short, so they fit under my grow lights but still give the MG's more length to climb. Of course, I have to 'help' them out with that - stupid things still reach out to climb on everything but the spiral!

Joanne

Orangeville, ON(Zone 4b)

Soup cans for shaping! Well I wish I would have thought of that! Good idea.
Yeah, I know about needing to train them some.....sheesh, I have these two MGs that everytime I turn my back, they're getting fresh with each other instead of sticking to their own bamboo pole. May have to separate those two...

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

LOL, I know exactly what you mean. And I have this Chilean Glory vine that a friend gave me that also seems overly friendly - attaches itself to the morning glories whenever it gets the chance!

Joanne

(Zone 6a)

Erryne and Joanne, you two are hilarious :) With your morning glories getting fresh. Mine's an only child so he doesn't get into much trouble and just put out his first bloom today! He he

Steven, you are making me so jealous (in a good way). l love your bloom! Mine aren't putting any buds out that I can see, but there's lots of new side shoots so it looks like they're wanting to get "fuller".
I sowed some seed for Ipomoea turbinata and Ipomoea setosa a couple of days ago and they're already up and at 'em. This is a fun hobby.
