I expressed interest in knowing the proper latin names of morning glories in an unrelated thread:
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/700077/
It was suggested that others might be interested in the answers I got, and that this might be a good topic for a new thread, so here it is.
Now, can some one tell me, is the 'Scarlet Star' MG the same as the 'Red Star' MG in the plant files? The picture on the packet of 'Scarlet Star' looks the same. Does Scarlet = Red?

MG Taxonomy - Naming of the Morning Glory
Jo, send us a picture, of the packet and of those that you grew from it and our taxonomy department will get onto it if you give enough information. Taxonomy in Morning Glories is probably much more difficult than you realize right now. Frank
Grow_Jo - Post a photo of whatever is depicted on the seed packet and if you can post clear closeups of any of the seeds >that might also be helpful...
The "Red Star" that is entered into the PlantFiles here
http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/107750/index.html
is in my opinion a duplicate of the entry here

The term >scarlet refers to a color that is a part of what is considered to be red...so also crimson is a type of red...
The question of what is 'true' or 'real' red has been presented before and the answer may prove to be somewhat elusive from an objective scientific point of view...
Red is a part of the entire Electro-Magnetic Spectrum of vibrations...some of these vibrations are a range of vibrations that are visible to humans as 'red'..additionally frequencies that are subliminal, paraliminal and usually invisible to the conscious mind affect our perception of color... .no 2 humans have the same exact(!) color vision...
What we perceive as color is NOT just the blending of the primary colors as found in 'white' light because there are a large number of substances that act as frequency splitters, doublers, absorbers, reflectors and otherwise modify and modulate the original frequencies that are received...the frequencies that are split and doubled are further split and doubled ad infinitum...(!)...so 'artificial' light is actually produced naturally(!) by the influence of the environment...some very deep sea bioluminescent creatures produce their own light in very narrow frequencies that only they can see...and pit vipers can see infrared light via the pits or infrared 'eyes' present on their outer jaws to get a visual image of 'trails' of their prey long after their prey has physically exited a particular place...
There ARE many different frequencies of red that are variously received by the human eye(receptor organ) and processed by the human nervous system >experienced as visible light...this results in frequencies of light that are visible to the human nervous system that may not(!) be present in the usual analysis of the constituents of 'white' light...The human eye also polarizes light in different ways...
So,of course we should use the term 'red' as seen by humans because animals, insects and plants 'see' red and other colors differently than humans do...
What is red(?!)...should we use the descriptions as used on Crayola crayons(?)...Professional painter materials...photographic or medical imaging materials and useage(?)...astrophysics or atomic or subatomic physics...where should the lines be drawn and which criteria is the 'correct' one to use...
Scarlet is a type of red...

http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/57867/index.html here it is showing both star types.
there are so many names out there for the same mg its ridiculous. and the name s keep changing.
so it is probably right to say they both are the same.
scareltt is concidered red but it is more of a pinkish red color.
was typing as Ron was.
Yup, I get that scarlet is a shade of red. I wonder if some marketing guy just decided that 'Scarlet Star' sounded more interesting than 'Red Star' and put that name on the seed packet! LOL.
Will post picture of seed packet and seeds later.
Joanne
From the viewpoint of an artist's palette, I've heard it said that the difference between crimson and scarlet is that crimson is a red on the blue side of the spectrum and that scarlet is a red on the yellow side of the spectrum. Developing leaf and flower color associations from that idea can result in some distinctive combinations .
Hey Grow_Jo - The photo shows that you have the T&M product that they call either "Red" or "Scarlet Star",but it's the same as the Japanese "Yaguruma"...(Ipomoea nil X Ipomoea purpurea) X Ipomoea nil...mentioned by name previously here
http://davesgarden.com/forums/p.php?pid=3061100
and is the same as the 2 duplicate PlantFile entries linked to at the beginning of my 1st reply above...
The Youjiro that you have usually sprouts readily and produces lots of blooms...
Looking forward to any photos of the progress of your plants...
TTY,...
Ron
Thanks again for your help Ron. I will definitely be posting photos to show off my plants!
Thank you Ron, there just is no other taxonomist that could stand up to YOU. Thank you for all the things you ad to this forum that make other people want to come here for information. Thanks Frank
