Can someone tell me how to prop Mexican Elder tree

Mesilla Park, NM

I've posted this on the propagation forum, but no-one has responded yet, sorry for the double post.

We just moved here and there are 3 Mexican Elder trees and they are great trees, I love them. How can I make more? When we moved here it appeared that they bloom (we got here in Mid October of 2006). And now, they have turned green (really green almost overnight), I think they may even be evergreen too. It seems that they have had some green on them these past few months.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Antoinette,
I just did a little research on your Mexican Elder tree. Here is a site that might be a little helpful to you. Doesn't say too much on propogation but it is worth a try.
Take care and Happy Spring.

Hey Norma!

Thanks for the link, will go check it out. Seem like these tree will have berries for the birds... no wonder there are tons of doves here in the trees.

Most elderberries are very easily propagated from cuttings. Some people claim that one can stick a cutting into moist soil any time of year and almost always get a new plant: I don't know if it's that easy for any species of elder, but that's their reputation. They also tend to sucker, and removing a sucker is supposed to work well.

Mark., hoping you can get more exact information

Mark,
Are the suckers growing on the tree it self, like new branches considered suckers? these trees are full of those, or do they have to come out of the ground to be suckers.. what a dumb question, but I truly don't know anything about trees.

Thanks.

Suckers generally mean out of the ground, from the roots rather than from the stem. Idea is to sever a bit of root and separate the sucker from the rest of the plant, along with enough attached root to support it.

Taking cuttings and rooting them should work fine, too, just I'm not sure what the best time of year is and whether success is as near-certain as I've heard claimed.

Mark., a little searching on line might help

Just wanted to let you all know that I found some saplings. for 19.00 at Wallyworld, can you believe that? Just have to take the truck. That is a good price but it looks like they are very slow growers.

Thanks for the info all.

A.
