Question on Birch trees in Anchorage.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

I have been up here for 2 weeks and of course Birch are the primary decidious tree here. There is no evidence of parasitic dammage like we have in all of ours in Montana. Why? No bugs (but there are), good genetics, or does the long dormancy protect the tree from all of the invaders? I am thinking of getting one and take it home from the woods when I come back up in the thaw.

Maybe they'll know in the Canadian Gardening Forum.

Probably too cold for the parasites.

Isn't dammage what beavers do with them? ;-))

I haven't canoed the rivers up here yet so havent seen beaver dammage but I watched a moose 2 days ago eating the top off one in the back parking lot.

Steve - I'm not sure if you could store one in the overhead compartment.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Yes but you can in a snow board bag. I have many ways of hauling trees in various bags.

That's right - I think I saw that movie '8 Trees In a Dufflebag'

Might confuse TSA.

I have smuggled many trees from my childhood trees: yearlings of that Acer saccinarium that I sat in and spit on cars, yearlings from a white pine that was the first tree that I summited as an eight year old, yearling from the largest horsechesnut that I often climbed and picked morel mushrooms nearby, my deer hunting red oak that I spent hours experiencing the forest in moments of fall splendor, ..... Also I have dug up specimens at the many travels that I found desire to have. Yes my travel bags always have a large duffel with trees surrounded by the dirty laundry I bring home. I know you Al you have the same memory trees. jSteve This is the 4 year old "spitting tree" A. Sac.

Steve - I didn't have any spitting trees, but certainly a lot of climbers. It's funny as I watch my kids climb trees how much I worry about them falling. Back when I was a kid we would climb 60' white pines to the top too, but we were pros because we didn't have distractions like video games, cell phones or friends. My parents still have this odd looking white pine in their yard that my older brother decleated me over the top of while playing football and snapped the main leader off.

Ahhhhh the memories. What is decleated? If you can say. I don't want you booted off. Steve.

I think that's a John Madden term for when you get knocked down and your back hits before your feet.

Ooooow. That is what has happened to me figurativly this non-stop 14 hour nights up here in Anchorage. But tonight is my last night then a week off. Ahhhhhhhh
