I took this photo the other day before we got more snow, it's the flower heads on Primula deniculata.
Steven
Spring is near!
I DID notice and admire the Rhodos outside the venue for DD's wedding last week in Vancouver. We NEVER get them that nice in Ottawa.
Ann
Steve, you realize you are spreading that spring fever. I'll be out on Thursday looking for green, as it's supposed to go up to +16C.
Do you have any more rhodo pics? They are so lovely when grown well.
Sandy
Steve, the first pic kinda looks like an octopus at first glance before I clicked the pic, lol. I haven't heard of Primula deniculata before.....what colour is it going to be when it blooms?
I don't have anything to show from my garden yet but I got some pics from beautiful BC with lots of green.
Rhodos seemed to be everywhere out there and they were jaw-dropping gorgeous. I'll post one pic of a Rhodo for now and Steve, let me know if it's okay with you to post some pics from BC as I don't want to highjack your thread.
Growin - Thanks for all the great pics of the Rhodo's from BC! It's always nice to see whats growing across the country.
Sandy - That's what I'm trying to do :) Hehehe. When I took that photo of the primrose I noticed the little polyanthus one was loaded with buds to except I couldn't get a decent photo.
Erynne - Here's a link to the primrose in the PlantFiles http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/65107/
they're usually pink, purple or white. They look like little drumsticks. This will be the first time blooming for mine as I just put it in last year. I also want to try them from seed.
Also, feel free to post your pics :) The more the merrier!
Steven
Very nice photos Erynne! I'll have to say the first and last are my favorites :)
I wish I could escape onto the internet at work, however I'm on one of those nasty internal systems where you get locked off from the outside world.
Anyways, keep posting your photos.....they're great!
Steven
Erynne - thanks for the photos of Hellebores. We saw them along the walkway we took from Granville Island way out along English Bay and I wondered what they were. Very pretty and blooming beautifully in early March.
Oh you're welcome Ann. I just love Hellebores and would love to add more to my garden. I have one white-flowered Hellebore but it bloomed this January......either it was confused or I was confused as I expected it to bloom later. I'm not sure what happened there or if it's done for the year. hmmm.
Steve, me thinks your a man who likes bolder colour! I'm into softer tones myself.
Camellia japonica "Debutante", Tea Family. Pic taken at VanDusen BG. I actually broke the rules to take this pic as they had that yellow barrier tape up ..."Caution, Do Not Enter". I didn't see any danger so I jumped over, took the pic and as I was coming back, a security guard in a golf cart came by.......oh great, busted being bad at the botanical gardens. I got off with a mere finger-wagging.
ooooooooooo....pretty, pretty, I must have one.....
We had only a chance to drive through it but I agree, the damage is extensive and awe inspiring.
Erynne, I believe the plant in your picture is Daphne mezereum. We have one blooming in the garden now as well. They're lovely.
Sandy
Erynne, the reason for the yellow tape is the Douglas Fir towering over the Camellia have very large broken branches and they are ensuring noone is hit by a branch. The Arum is Arum italicum. I also took a pic of the "Debutante" Camellia - it's kinda leaning over funny. Happy to see you had a chance to enjoy the blooms while here!
Sandy, thanks for letting me the name of that shrub. How long do the blooms last on Daphne mezereum?
growin, did you cross the tape barrier too to get at that Camellia? Lol.
I didn't notice if the Camellia was leaning awkwardly but then again, I wouldn't know it's normal stance as I'd never seen one before! I wish we could grow them here :(
VanDusen is a must see garden for anyone visiting Vancouver and dining at the on-site restaurant in the evening is highly recommended.....yummy food!
Spring has sprung on this thread. Erynne, what a great place to go this time of year! I love the little cheeky crocus playing peek-a-boo and the heathers in the last shot, gorgeous!
Sandy
Erynne, once again, very nice photos! I really like that Camellia, at first I thought it was a rose, very nice colour. I'll take any colours really, I do quite like the bolders ones :)
When I got back from work today, I decided to take a stroll around my yard....and I found Crocus!
I completly forgot about them and did not expect them this early, little clumps of purple crocus scattered around the yard :)
I'll try to get out there again and take a picture.
Steven
I also found crocuses peeking up - not blooming yet, but if the mild weather continues, they could be within a week. Yesterday they were covered with snow.
very pretty, I was roaming around the garden today, mine aren't even up yet :((
Lovely colour!
Thanks, Growin and 3Gardeners :)
Thanks, SW. You give us hope. Actually almost all my snow has disappeared in the last few days and the bunnies or squirrels have already started to munch on my crocuses and they aren't even to bud stage yet. Grrrrr!
I saw a crocus peeping up today!!!! Was almost on my hands and knees, scanning the lawn, but there it was....neighbours think I'm crazy already anyways.....
They're yellow and white...I needed bright ones cause I put them all through the lawn...now the dog's upset she's not allowed to walk there anymore.....lol.....and I yelled at the oil man, made him drag his hose the long way around, he was very good natured about it though.
Spring is definitely springing. My first early tulips were blooming today along with a number of Scilla. (I see you call them Squill ?? That's a name I've not heard)
I posted pics of my massive crocus bed here -
http://davesgarden.com/forums/p.php?pid=3405600
Unfortunately, they are pretty well gone with the past three days of summer-like weather.
Will try to get a pic of the tulips tomorrow.

Beautiful pics everyone. Don't you just love spring? As seems to be usual with me, I managed to procrastinate about taking spring flower pictures until we got a late heavy snowfall that destroyed all the blooms, so I can't post any crocus or scilla for you to see. We'll see if I manage to do any better with the daffodils and hyacinths. LOL I've had three years to get this right and I still don't have a single pic!
