My neighbor decided to plant some kind of vegetable garden and used a tractor disc all the way up to the property line. The problem is I have several 75ft tall pecan trees along that property line and I am sure he ran that disc over the roots. What in the world should I expect now?
Damaged roots from a tractor
Discs unlike plows don't go down very far. Our small disc only gets the top few inches even after several passes. A larger disc would of course go deeper, but would also have to be weighed down with extra weights. That's the good news. There's bound to be damage to the top. How much will depend on the health of the roots on your side of the property.
If you and your neighbor are on good terms, ask how deep he went and see if he'll let you check a few spots for tree roots.
I went out there this morning and looked and he went out about 5ft from the trunk of the tree. It doesn't look extremely deep so maybe it will be okay. The roots on my side of the trees are in good shape, there is a fence on the property line and the trees are just barely on my side. I also mulch my side heavily with fallen leaves.
