Baby morning glories - now what????

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

I have successfully germinated 25 morning glory seeds I received in trade. They germinated in little peat pellets, which I then put in 4" x 4" x 4" paper pots with pro-mix potting soil. They have their little butterfly leaves.

Should I be pinching these as they grow to encourage bushiness? When can they be planted outside? How far apart?

I don't think these are anything exotic - just your run-of-the-mill morning glory mixed seed.

Any advice?

Thanks in advance,
Seandor

You can plant them outdoors in the ground at the base of a trellis or fence to let them use it as a support. I think you should wait until the ground gets fairly warm, certainly warmer than say 60 degrees F. and after the last frost date. What was/were the cultivar name(s) on the package?

The only thing on the package was: Morning glory - early mixed. I presume "early" means they close early during the afternoon . . . I don't they are anything too exotic. Average last date of frost here is April 29. so what do I do in the meantime?

Keep as many of them near a well lighted window, or provide an artificial light for them. You can try growing some in a container using a small trellis in the container, to learn from the experience on how to grow them, perhaps?

But I don't pinch them or anything?

Wait to do that until the 8th true leaf appears. Then the vine will send out laterals to fill up the trellis.

Hi Seandor - WElcome to the MG forum...

You mentioned

"I presume "early" means they close early during the afternoon"

The 'early' adjective usually refers to feature of some cultivars that bloom earlier in the season...

Thanks Ron - just received some more mg seeds - these ones are called "Grampa Otis" I will start these to. Boy, are my neighbours going to be inundated with free plants :-)

And Gerris 2 - thanks for the info. I will watch for the 8th true leaf and starting pinching then.

Cheers,
Seandor
