Ipomoea shumardiana MG native to Oklahoma sought...

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

Ipomoea shumardiana is a Morning Glory species that is native to Oklahoma,Southern Kansas and Northernmost Texas, but the vast majority of living specimens are located only in Oklahoma...

There are no photos of living plants of this US native anywhere on the entire Web...

Ipomoea shumardiana is variously described as a perennial large rooted species having features of Ipomoea leptophylla and Ipomoea pandurata...

I'm hoping that someone in Oklahoma(or perhaps Kansas) would be willing to try and locate this plant and at least photograph it for the World to be able to at least see it...

I thought that through a combination of the Oklahoma Native Plant Society and the herbariums that have vouchered specimens with collection details that photos might be able to be taken and made available for the World to see and Enjoy...

Anybody(?!)...interested and/or willing...(?!)...

Oh people, this is really getting me excited about this summer and the vacation season. If that lady that took those pictures of those species on a Mexico vation, and we usually already have some Idea what they might be, just think of the potential to fill out the plant files on the unphotographed, indigenous North American species. We all need to develope a plan of what species we can get pix of this year, whether on vacation, family reunion, camping, or whatever.

We also need to upgrade our digital camera capabilities. Our digital cameras need at least to have a manual focus, if not a macro mode. Camera prices are so low these days it just boggles the mind.

I just bout a camera package that includes a 6 megapixel SLR, with 4 lenses for less than I paid 10 years ago for a Kodak point and shoot.! I am going macro in a big way now. You guys probably will too soon.

We can go out this summer and get those pictures of unphoto'd species for the plant files, and we don't even have to know we are doing it. We can find out after we post them! We can also take better pix because we might have a better camer now than when the first pix were posted to the files.

We are probably going to need a thread for camera testing, learning to shoot close ups with SLRs.
For the un initiated, this SLR means single lens reflex, that is a holdover from the film camera days, and is now out there and available in "DIGITAL" SLRs. This means you have manual focus, then the next step is macro and closup shots. Frank

Paul - The difficulty is that there are no reference photos...so I thought that if someone was a member of the Oklahoma Native Plant Society >that they might be able to extract some exact location information from some of the herbariums in Ohlahoma...

P.S. - I do know of a Wildlife Refuge in Kansas that reports this plant as growing on their reserve...
