I was hoping to purchase this viburnum from a local nursery in Naperville last year. They had it in their 2006 catalog, but never did receive it. It's not even in their recent 2007 catalog (guess their potential supplier just couldn't come through). I'm considering ordering a few of them online soon from Forest Farms. I know Kevin_5 has had this little beauty in his garden for a while, and I'm wondering after this past winter how his, and any others folks' in z5, are doing before I hit that "send order" button.
How is your Viburnum farreri 'Nanum' faring in zone 5 now?
I'm not going to provide much value to your zone 5 estimations, except to say that the Klehm family of nurseries is producing this plant and they don't generally waste their time on throwaway plants. If you aren't aware, this nursery family dates back to the 1850s in the Chicago area.
I have Viburnum farreri and 'Candidissimum', both acquired from the Klehms and both have flower buds ready to burst any day now. These plants should do much better for you in cooler zone 5 than for me in the hot humid Ohio River valley.
It doesn't have any issues with hardiness here. Unscathed this winter, and every winter before. You might call The Barn Nursery in Cary(?), or is it Crystal Lake? They have had some in the past. Classic Viburnums will have it for sure.
Thank you, VV and Kevin, for the helpful info. I'll proceed with my purchase, but I'll check first with The Barn Nursery about availability this year--I'd prefer to buy it locally, in person. I've never purchased before from Classic Viburnums. What I'd be ordering from Forest Farms would be their 1-gal pot size, 1-2 ft tall specimens. A post by gloria125 today has repeated a Classic Viburnums' catalog listing provided on this forum a while back by Equilibrium. It indeed includes V. farreri 'Nanum', but before I call Classic Viburnums, can you comment, in general, on the plant size ranges they can ship?
I have never seen what size they ship DWK. I have only visited(hopefully again this spring).
Kevin, I called The Barn Nursery this morning and was told that it has been a few years since they last sold this cultivar. The man-in-charge said he used to get it from a wholesale nursery in Ohio, but that company stopped offering it. He said he would love to offer it again but can't find it from anyone he deals with. I emailed Classic Viburnums, heard back from Sue, and will be ordering several from them. Thanks again for the info.
