Oh how I adore my odora! This is such a sweet smelling shrub just when we need it most...Feb/Mar here in central NC. One problem...my variagated ones lose most of their leaves in the winter. The new leaf buds luckily are on the stems right behind the fallen ones, but I can't figure out what we're doing wrong. I thought these were evergreen! This is their second winter in the ground. We haven't done anything to them but use a little hollytone after bloom. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. We hate to think we're totally stressing these plants!
Winter Daphne Help
I don't know if you're doing anything wrong--they are supposed to be evergreen, but you are towards the colder end of their hardiness range and I've found some of my plants that are supposedly evergreen will drop leaves in the winter if it gets a little colder than they like. Not sure if that's what's going on here, Daphnes can be somewhat finicky, but since it sounds like it's coming back fine for you in the spring I don't know if I would worry too much. Hopefully someone else from your zone will come along and share their Daphne experiences.
Thanks ecrane3. We feel better already. Maybe we should try some winter protection next year and see if that helps...up until bloom time of course!
