Morning glories of the Yucatan

Carson City, NV(Zone 6b)

I just got back from driving around the Yucatan for a couple of weeks and have photos of the many fabulous morning glories that grow wild down there. I'm sure the locals consider them weeds but I thought they were great. If anyone knows what they are, I would love to hear. I collected seeds when I could find them and sent them to my house.

#1. This was about the same size and color as heavenly blue. We only found four seeds and they were short and rounded (not long and pointed like our heavenly blue.

#1 Growing over some bushes and trees in the Puerto Morelos Botanical Garden.

#2 This pretty pink flowered plant was growing all over some old sheds near the entrance to the Tulum Ruins. We searched for seeds for about 10 minutes but couldn't find any. The other tourists were starting to watch us so we gave up.

#3 This one was along the path at Tulum between the entrance and the actual ruins. No seeds within easy reach and I didn't want to get in trouble for not staying on the path. SImilar to #1.

#4 At the turn off to Mahahual. Found several seeds but the photos didn't turn out very good. Seeds are dark and rounded. We saw a lot of these on the roadsides.

#5 Similar to #2, these were growing along a road in the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve. While we were hunting for seeds, a man who was walking to work at a nearby ranch stopped to see what we were doing. He must have gone to work and told his friends about the crazy american picking weeds on the side of the road. We found quite a few seeds at this place.

Oops, here is #5 with sepals.

Here is #5 with some leaves of another plant (but still a pretty picture).

#6 Was on the road side near the town of Ucum. The flowers look like #1 but the whole plant was hairy and it has really long sepals.

#6 More Sepals. The seeds are dark and angular like Grampa Ott seeds.

#7 This little one has flowers about the size of a quarter (or a 2 peso coin).

#7 We didn't find any seeds on this plant but found some a little farther down the road. This plant was in a village on the old road between Cancun and Chichen Itza (close to Chichen). That's all folks!

Katlian, Incredible photo's. Thank you so much for sharing. So glad
you were able to gather some seeds. Love the pink one and the last small blue flowered that opened in clusters.

Hey Katlian - Glad to see that you were able to enjoy your visit and collect some MG seeds...

Here's what my assessment is...

Ipomoea indica

http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/Katlian_1174152770_894.jpg
http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/Katlian_1174152893_457.jpg

not sure on the following photo as per ID...need to be able to see more structures...leaves look very large in relation to the size of the bloom...doesn't quite look like any of the others...

Ipomoea nil or Ipomoea indica...need to see a better view of the sepals...

Ipomoea cordatotriloba...probably var.torreyana

There looks to be 2 different MG leaves in these photos...the small blue flowers are most likely Jacquemontia pentathos (seeds are very small) and have the more elongated arrow shaped leaves
the more cordate leaves with the very rounded upper lobes look like a MG that was not yet flowering when the photo was taken...

Why worry about what the others thought...just tell them you need to photograph particular parts for your documentation...hold up a cardboard sign that says in English and Spanish...special research photographers...

Hope that helps and toss me a few seeds of whatever you can spare >if you are able...

TTY,...

Ron
