Ilex Cornuta

Has anybody else noticed these things being weedy? So far I have found five seedlings in my yard. I can't think of any mature plants close by, so the birds must be carrying the seeds a great distance. I didn't want to ask in the invasive forum since they're not invasive, yet.

Escambi... I would dig that baby and any others up and put it in a big pot off the ground. Look like you got some Ilex cornuta 'Rotunda' as oen of the parent s there. If that gets establishe d good, you wil never get it all out as it spreads underground. It is the nasties holly I have ever seen and the worst nightmare that I have had to clear out for several landscapign jobs.

Only thing is I can't tell who the other parent might be. Looks like maybe ' Bufordii'. I woudl try and keep it for abit an evaluate it. They always huntign for new cultivars that interestign for the market.

I have had reseeding too. I've been waiting for Ilex cornuta to make someone's list. Considering the vast landscape use in this area and the amount of berries produced I don't think it should be considered very invasive but I wouldn't be surprised to see it named.

There is alot of the I. cornutas that make nice srubs that stay pretty nice. I like 'Needlepoint' and 'Clarissa'. Some times 'Clarissa' will return to ' Rotunda' if pruned to heavily.

They are great if you want to make a headge to keep people out. They definately ain't gonna try and go through them needles.

The one cornuta that I saw that makes a nice small shrub and headge is I. cornuta ' William Jackson.'

I keep my eye out for I.opaca seedlings when I walk the woods so I won't step on them, I'd like to have more of those established. Since these I.cornuta seem to be capable reseeders and not native, I'll probably toss them.

I'll keep my eye for ya for I. opaca too now that I know you lookign for them.
