strange seedling

Baton Rouge area, LA(Zone 8b)

Yesterday morning when I was checking on my picotee seedlings I noticed a strange one. It had one stem and Three cotyledon leaves! I looked very close and there is only one stem. Is this common? This is the first time I have seen this.

Cool! It's like it has an semi-formed attached twin.

Karen - The seedlings with more than the usual number of cotyledons are cool...

There's been a couple other members who have gotten seedlings with more than 2 cotyledons...I usually recommend keeping an eye on these because although many multiple cotyledon seedlings produce entirely 'normal' loooking plants...multiple cotyledons can also be a sign of chromosome 'aberrations'...so,you might get lucky and the plant may produce some interesting mutations for you...

Ok,I`ll keep an eye on this one. It is very neat because it is perfect going three ways in the middle with the first leaf bud right in the center. I`ll post again if anything else unusual happens.

Very cool!

Here is another cool one I found. It is interesting the way the leaf has sort of an extension on one side of one of the cotyledon leaves.

NIce clear photo Arlan...that's the second 3-leaved cotyledon I've seen from Stacey's seeds...

Very neat Arlan. I got another strange seedling from a batch of unknown tan seeds I singled out. It looks like a flare nut wrench.

Another. I wonder if this is a mutant. Maybe?

Karen, that is an interesting seedling! I would say the odds are pretty good that it is showing the influence of some of the mutant genes. The plant is smaller than its roommates, and the shape of the cotyledons is foretelling something! Often plants carrying the feathered gene have the rolled/curled edges on the cotyledons that yours is showing. As its true leaves develop, we might be able to further narrow our guesses! The flower will be the truth teller!

That is exciting....where did the seed come from? Could it have been a Kyushu University mix?

That's very interesting. I have one that looks strange from the special mix package and another.one that I'm watching. I'll post pictures in a few days when they are larger.

Nice seedlings !
I wonder if it's due to the variety or if it's an unexpected mutation..

Gardener2005, i live in BR also and was wondering if you have any trouble getting Mgs to come back each year?

Hi, These came from bags of seeds I collected over time from komeri Japanese Morning glory Seeds store on ebay. I dumped all the bags labeled "unknown" and seperated the seeds by color and size. The mutant looking seedling has my designated label "unknown tan seeds". I`m growing university samples and do have one that is a bit different but most of these look normal as far as cotyledons, leaves and they look nice too. I`ll update more later as they grow out more.

As far as seedling volunteers from last year, I have to grow my morning glories with protective cages or otherwise the armadillos dig them up before they ever get started. As long as the spot is protected I see lots of volunteers of nils and purpureas in my garden. When I`m trying to grow something different in one area I mark the seedling started on 4" pots and weed out any volunteers.

I have to add that I`m very fascinated by these little new comers in my garden. More are showing some different looking leaves. I`ll update more later because today is a dig in the dirt, make supports for the vines workday for us here. Some of these vines have grown a foot in days of time so it is time to hurry up and fix places for them to climb.

Some of the university seeds show a normal looking cotyledon but the leaves are looking unusual. The special mix recently shared has a variety and one appears to be a picotee. The gift seeds have one that is sort of different from all the others too.

It will be very interesting to watch these grow, compare pictures and learn more about exactly what kind these are and what keep them going true as well. What a challenge and fun too. Now that the weather has faired up we can breathe a sigh of relief and get to work!

I have a few of these with 3 cotyledons and the seeds are from the Japanese Special Mix package. I'll show some of the other strange looking ones when they've grown more.

Neat. Can you believe even one of my sunflower seeds did this? I also found another JMG with the cotyledon fused into one big leaf and the sprout was growing out the side underneath the cotyledon. I didn`t have time to get a picture but that one was unusual.

The mutant ones are leafing out more. One mutant is bigger than the others. It appears I do have an interesting mixture of seedlings here and that makes it even more interesting!!!

I`ll be back later on with more pictures of the unusual seedlings.

Here is a update on the pot of mutants. 13 days have passed since the first picture. They are leafing out. One has very skinny leaves curled on the edges. I sprouted the aquatica and while it bears some resemblance the color and texture of the leaf sets them apart. One of these has a leaf that curls up on the end and all the leaves coming out are sort of balled up and curled. All of them have lipping on the leaf edges. I think these look weird in a good fascinating kind of way and I really am enjoying watching them grow and change from day to day.

Here is another strange looking one that is big and is growing fast. It is the one toward the left and these are 4 gallon pots.
