Make it go away!

I hate this stuff. I think its cankery but I don't really know. It's very destructive whatever it is. Can anyone help? Its all over this Japanese Maple and on a neighboring Wisteria as well.

Nectria (Red-spot fungus). It is primarily a decay fungus on dead wood, but can also turn pathogenic and cause slow dieback on adjacent live wood, as you have here. Not easy to control, unfortunately. When pruning, sterilise the tools after cutting anything that has the fungus on it.

What? Are you implying that I might not be a clean gardener? :) Actually, one of my favorite tools used to be this handy little canister that hooked up to my Felco pruners. Everytime I cut, the blade got a spray of alcohol. It was swell for pruning out fireblight but not so much fun if you'd been pruning roses any time in the recent past.

I had to leave that tool behind when I left that job. I should go see if I can find another.

In the mean time, thanks for the ID.
