Hello DG! Our house is in a newer developement and there are no trees to shade us from full summer sun. My AC runs constantly in the Summer! If anyone can recommend a nice shade tree for our area it would be most appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
Hanna
Needing a lovely, fast-growing shade tree in Oregon (7b-8a)
The native Acer macrophylla (Big Leaf Maple) seems to grow pretty fast IMO and produces a good amount of shade. There's a number of cultivars of Acer rubrum (Red Maple) which should be readily available in your area and are good growers. If I really wanted shade/wind protection on a large property I'd probably plant a Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata). There's quite a few large street tree nurseries near you there should be a good supply. Here's a great resource for reviewing plants at OSU with descriptions & images: http://oregonstate.edu/dept/ldplants/1plants.htm
Here's a search on Oregon Association of Nurseries for Shade Trees: http://nurseryguide.com/nurseryguide/Action.lasso?-database=Plants&-layout=Layout&-response=/nurseryguide/browse1.lasso&-noResults=/nurseryguide/browse-error.lasso&-sortField=&-maxRecords=50&Indent=1&listing=I&-search
You may want to also pose this question in the Pacific Northwest Forum and get some comments from local gardeners.
Thank you so much! I'm going over to PNWfo right now!

How about Quercus garryana (Oregon White Oak)..
Hi Hanna,
Don't know if you have logged back on recently but here's a nice site I found that might have some ideas for you-

I liked the suggestion of the Quercus garryana (Oregon White Oak) but an Acer macrophylla (Big Leaf Maple) would be real attractive also.
If you are near these nurseries, you might want to stop in-

The only concern I have with Quercus garryana (Oregon White Oak) is that it really doesn't produce too much shade. It's very picturesque and a nice tree but it is open.
HannaMomma, you may also want to look at what might be available at ForestFarm or call them for a suggestion. There is also Gossler. A number of nurseries listed in Watchdog. You may also want to ensure there aren't any rules in the new development around tree planting. For something very unusual Cistus Nursery probably has something.
