A new way (for me) to WS directly into hanging planters

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Today I was WSing annuals directly into hanging planters but was having a little trouble getting the hangers off. That's when it hit me. I could use the plastic hangers as supports for Saran Wrap and make a little greenhouse. So I did, for petunias, morning glories and nasturtiums. I actually used that wrap that clings to itself. [I bought it for dahlia tubers, but that's another story...]

I'll post a picture when I take one!

What a good idea. I have lots of hanging baskets I plant, with your way, I can just sow them direct and not have to worry about the transplant set back. Thank you.

So you can visualize it without a picture? I should add that I used last year's soil but it was new last year!

Yes, got a good visual, even tried one with some petunia seeds I have. Works wonderfully!!!

That's a great idea. I wonder if it would work for wintersowing morning glories? I might try it. Thanks for the tip.

Yes, I do that, but I also use supports between the hangers to keep snow from knocking it onto the soil. I'll attach a photo that shows it. I use plastic bags over the top.

ok, excellent idea. you guys think of everything. can you get seeds for million bells (Calibrachoa )? I love petunias, but I'd really like to try those.

No, the snow is gone. That photo was taken a while ago.

gram -- i'm doing wave petunias for the first time. DH and I just love them and to buy'em it's quite costly... so i figured i'd try to grow them this year. I think i read that they germinate pretty quickly. Hopefully they will do well.

I've been hunting for Calibrochoa seeds myself! Yep, I'm trying wave petunias too. I liked my idea so much that I found another hanging planter I can use!

all my hanging planters are in Wisc in my shed. I dont have any at home.

>>Calibrochoa

wow, those are pretty. did a quick search and cant find any seeds, only plants.

Just did a quick search- seems they are vegetatively propagated.

Do your own search, Carrie. PlantFiles has 2 entries for propagation: one for seeds, the other says cuttings only. But I found sereral other sites that said cuttings, and I didn't find seeds, and you didn't find seeds, so that's a good clue there.

Back to my brilliant hanging planter idea - they didn't stand up to even a little wind. One collapsed, the other hung on bravely but you could tell it was near collapse. More tape!

Well Carrie, it's still a brilliant idea, just a matter of adjusting the materials! I'm thinking of using your idea to wintersow morning glories into a planter; I'd use the trellis or obelisk to help make a plastic tent for the mini greenhouse effect.
