Hybrid chestnuts

Atmore, AL(Zone 8b)

My hybrid chestnuts that I bought from Oikos are leafing out. The one in this picture is in a pot, so it leafed out a little earlier. Is there any way to tell by the foliage which parent it is taking after?

This one is in the ground and is my largest one.

It's got quite strongly dentate leaves, so perhaps C. dentata. But at this age, I'd suspect it's not really feasible to tell. They're hard enough to tell apart as adults of the various pure species, let alone the hybrids.

Chinese Chestnut leaves are pubescent on the underside but American are hairless and American are more deeply serrated than the Chinese. But you really need more mature leaves to tell. Google Sandra Anagnostakis and chestnuts and you will find some sites that might help you more.

I have a growing collection of pure and hybrid Chestnuts...... great trees!

I've got a few from Oikos, nice little trees too! All of mine are glabrous on the underside of the leaves save one. I like their Timburr Chestnut the best so far.

I have one "Timburr" but I haven't gotten a picture of it, the ones in these photos are the "ECOS". That one in the top photo has already grown about 5 inches in two weeks, so it seems they're going to be fast growing trees. The only problem I have seen so far is some aphids.
